Torn between two 570 cards - which would you get?

Phantom.

I don't know how much accuracy there is in this but one review I saw found the Phantom didn't overclock well. Apart from that they couldn't fault it.

Maybe another thing to factor is that iirc MSI are based in the U.K., so an RMA turn around should be quick.

Currently 1920x1200, Dell 2407. Running a Q6600 @ 3.2GHz with 4Mb DDR2. I'll be changing to an i5 soon, this is the first upgrade phase. I'll possibly either get a second 570 or sell it on when the next gen come out if I look at upping my resolution to 2560x1600 (got my eye on a nice Dell 3011).

Personally id try get a bit more money together (or save a bit more :p ) and go for a 3gb 580. You will benefit from having more VRAM since you play at a high res.

Yeah, I was thinking that as well. Although a 570 with 1280mb vram will for most games be fine, I think the additional vram might come in handy, I know it would for me when applying mods etc.

Have you considered something like a 6950?

3Gb 580 is a bit too far over budget ... at least if I get 1 570 now then I can pick up another one cheaper further down the line and spread the £ pain.

2x 6950s have a combined vRAM of 4Gb, compare to 2.6Gb with 2x 570? Is that how it works?

No, two 6950's still means 2gb of usable memory. Two 570's with 2.5gb would still equate to 2.5gb of vram. The vram doesn't double up, it's other aspects of the architecture that provides better frame rates, texture units, stream processors etc.

um I could be wrong here but I dont think SLI or xfire combines VRAM. Its purely based on processing power.

Ya the 3gb 580 might be a bit more but if it will give you better performance than 2x 570's why not invest in one really good card than split the cost and get 2 ok cards ? Patience is a virtue :) Plus the cost of 570s are not going to go down anytime soon tbh. GTX 480's still sell for approx 200quid.

So the cost of two 570s will prob end up being a lot more than one 3gb 580

The Phantom is a different animal to our Power Edition. Both feature custom PCB, both feature custom cooling but the Phantom is built for style (& my god does it look good) andthe MSI is built for brute force, pure and simple.

To give you an example, both Bit-Tech and Overclock3d hit a maximum of 825Mhz when overclocking the Phantom. My first review of the 570 Power Edition (sample sourced from OcUK's own stock) on Vortez features an overclock of 962Mhz.
