Hi guys,

I am using a mac and windows pc, but thought Id put it in here as it applies to both + I think its more of a generic issue.

So heres my problem, everytime I have a torrent program open , be it transmission on a mac or utorrent on windows, the rest of the internet is extremely slow.

I realise that if I was downloading at 500-600 kb, it going to be slow, but even downloading normally at those speeds, the interent is still fairly quick. Even when Im downloading at something silly like 20kb, the internet is incredibly slow.

Is there a reason for this? Does it happen to you guys?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Make sure you set your upload limit in your torrent client to about 80% of your maximum upload rate.

When you are downloading in other applications (i.e. a web browser), you still need to have some spare upload bandwidth to send ACK (acknowledgement) packets when recieving download packets.

If you swamp your upload bandwidth with your torrent client, it will kill your download speed.

If its not your upload... it could actually be your router (if your using one)!

I used to have a belkin one, and as soon i as would start torrents it would slow up something bad for general browsing for all users on the network :(

Now im using a Linksys one and had no issues what so ever :)

Ok, cheers for that guys.

On transmission on my mac, the upload speed is ranging from 10kb, to 80kb - is that high?

Should I just kill my upload when I need to use the web aswell?

Depends on how fast your upload connection is.
Which ISP & package you using?

I would say 80kb is quite high but without knowing connection it would be hard to tell

Probably no need to kill all uploads in your torrent client, you just need to limit it properly.

Which ISP are you with and what package are you on?

What torrent client are you using?

Given that info, we could possibly tell you how to configure your torrent client so that you use the web and torrent at the same time.

Edit: Assuming your download problems are due to maxing out your upload ( or download ) bandwidth in your torrent client.

I use transmission for my mac and utorrent for pc.

Im on SKY BB, with the "mid" package - upto 8mb, and I get about 6mb.

Thanks :D

Ok, I will try to help you with the PC settings for uttorent at the moment.

First off, I am using Azureus (vuze) at the moment on PC and have never used utorrent, so I am only going by google.

Google says the max upload rate for your package is 256Kb (256 kilobits per second ( 32 kilobytes per second ).

Now, according to google, in utorrent you need to select :
preferences->network options

and set the global upload/download limits from there.

Now I don't know which units utorrent uses, either Kb(kilobits) or KB(kilobytes) but most torrent clients use kilobytes.

So assuming your torrent client uses kilobytes your max upload is around 32KB so set the upload limit to (80%) 25 KB.

If your torrent client uses kilobits, set your upload limit to 205 Kb.

If the units are different or if you have any trouble, let me know how you get on.

I have the same problem, im on virgin media 20mb, and using Utorrent with NOD32...its really annoying that when im using torrents, i have to stop everything else, or download over night.

settings in Utorrent are
Upload rate 10
global connections 80
connections per torrent 40
upload slots per torrent 2

That upload rate shouldn't be maxing out your connection, so it's more likely you're bumping against your router's connection limit.

Yeah its going to be the number of connections to the torrent is maxing out your router.

Nothing to do with the speed the connection are going at just the number of them.

Try a lower number of connections per torrent.

Also in utorrent you could try going to Preferences>Advanced> net.max_halfopen and change this from 8 to 4.

If that does not work let us know.

Right ive lowered the connections to 20 per torrent, and changed the net.max_halfopen thing to 4..rebooted computer, restarted utorrent and still the same thing, torrents are downloading at a good speed 1.3mb, but in doing so makes the whole computer unusable.

quick edit..im gonna try a direct connection from the modem straight to the pc, to rule out the router.

Edit no.2- Full direct connection to the modem, same thing happening with Utorrent open and download speeds dropped. i really dont understand this at all, as i can download from a web/ftp and ill download at the full 20mb connection and not a hint of slow downs.

Im on XPPro SP3 btw none of this fancy vista stuff hehe.

Have you tried a different program to see if that fixes it.

There is a huge guide on the utorrent forums about configuring the program.

Most people seem to either use utorrent or vuze so I'd just try the other to save the hours of fiddling with settings.

Yea ill have a gander at the forums and see whats-what, and ill try vuze

Gave utorrent a miss and tryed Vuze..well thats solved all the problems straight out, and perfect download speeds, happy chappy again.
