I have a couple of large files I'd like to share with a couple of colleagues and family members abroad.

I thought the best way to get them to everyone is through Bit Torrent. Now, I'd like to set up a tracker on my website and i've been searching all day and found a couple, but they don't seem to work.

Can anyone recommend anything simple and easy to install, free preferably, but i'll gladly pay for it, if it's that good.

Note: This has nothing to do with illegal files, or anything of that sort- thought i'd point that out incase it turns into a silly discusion.

luckily - the public trackers aren't actually illegal in themselves. you'd be perfectly within the law to use an open tracker to seed something legal without fear of ramification. use of the following announce urls when creating your tracker, and it won't be indexed by the naughty sites unless you post to them (it never has for me in the past :))

* http://open.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce
* http://www.torrent-downloads.to:2710/announce
* http://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce
* udp://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce
* http://www.sumotracker.com/announce
* http://pirates.sumotracker.com/announce

if I'm not allowed to post this kind of info, please consider not banning me - I'm posting it for purely legal purposes :)

Thanks a lot, I might just use one of those trackers, might be a whole load easier than installing my own!

Of course you can also add whatever protection to the files you send before you create a torrent to stop them getting into the wrong hands. Depending on how sensitive the data in you could use something like TrueCrypt and send the key over a secure channel. Bitorrent may not be the fastest way to transfer files but it is very reliable (at least compared to something like Skype, MSN, FTP or Email).
