Depends which mood he's in.

This.

Although I utterly despise him as a person, i'd not want him at United if he was the last striker on Earth. Nothing against his footballing ability mind, I just can't stand him.

Even if he scores no goals yes.

He'll repay 50m in shirt sales in about 18 months much like Beckham and Ronaldo at Madrid. Very marketable player.

Mods should save themselves some time and just rename the thread to 'Which Orifice should Fernando Torres Receive Red-Hot Irons into?' for the resident Reds...

Where do people get this idea from?

Adidas have an agreement with Chelsea where they pay them £xm per season for the rights to manufacture their shirts. Adidas make their money by selling the shirts to the retailers, including Chelsea's club shop.

The only money Chelsea will make from shirt sales is the mark-up they make on shirts sold directly from the club.

Beyond that, whenever their shirt deal is up for renewal or sponsorship deals are up for renewal, they might be able to agree better terms on the back of signing Torres. However it's highly unlikely that the signing of Torres will result in anything like £50m, even over the 5 years he's there.

You're such a Whizkid Baz :p

He's priceless if he can be ****ed, just a merc though, somethings happened or hes a good lier.

Nice piece of business by Liverpool. Think of all the legendary strikers they've had.....Torres isn't the be-all and end-all by any means. And as somebody else said, considering there's some question marks over his game right now....I'd bite Chelsea's arm off for that 50 million.

If Carrol is worth £35m then yes , Torres is worth £50m if not more!

this,

we shouldnt even be discussing torres but carrol, £35m, that could have bought how many van der vaarts?

on a more serious note, 35m could have bought david villa (before he moved to barca), luis fabiano, aguero, forlan, milito, tevez, benzema, etc.

torres is probably worth around £35m if you look at signings of similar players, and chelsea overpaid like they usually do because they have oil money just like man city do, but liverpool dont have oil money to be throwing away.

liverpool have been selling world class players and buying in cheap replacements for years now. the only ones left to go are reina and gerrard. suarez has probably been the only decent signing they have made in a long time. carrol is good too but overpaid.

I don't think its quite as easy as that Baz, just because, if you have someone who sells THAT many shirts, it gives you better bargaining power when you make those deals. But also, like with almost any massive contract, as its essentially a sponsorship deal, there could easily be triggers like, sell 1million, get the bog standard prepaid cash, sell 3million, get a bonus 2million quid, etc, etc.

But then theres the other thing, people insist Torres is a massive shirt selling player, because Liverpool sell more Torres shirts than anyone else.

The problem is that doesn't mean Torres is selling more shirts, it just means people buying shirts are choosing Torres more than the other players.

They could have sold 2million shirts last year, of which 1.1million had Torres on it, they could sell 2million next year of which 500k are Carroll, 500k are Suarez, 100k are Adam's for those stupid fans that jumped the gun and the rest of the sales are identical.

Really its impossible to know, though in general lots of people who bought Torres shirts will dump them and buy a new shirt. You could say a move generates a lot of shirt sales from those wanting to not wear the old name and wanting to have a new players name on their shirt.

Is he worth 50mil, I'd say he's overpriced by quite a lot, Carroll was overpriced by a little less and Newcastle had an incredibly good transfer window.

Assuming Newcastle stay up they could have a quite silly summer buying players as they supposedly had a little cash to burn before Carroll left. Of course the same people who said Newcastle had a healthy cashflow before the Carroll deal also described Ameobi as an "incredibly talented player", SSN are less and less reliable.

Personally I reckon 30mil would have been more than fair for Torres, he's moody, doesnt' seem to react well in the slightest to the team playing badly, seems to need a lot of protection in terms of injurys. Not old, but not young either. Poor form for over a year now.

Carroll should probably have gone for 20-25mil, even if he turns out to be a great goal getter its rare to pay THAT much for potential as obviously its a two way street and he could turn out rubbish.
