toshiba CPU upggrade slight issue

Hi all
I recently changed the CPU in my Toshiba satellite l750-1ek
it has 8gb ram

It had an i3-370m, I put an i7-640m in

since then, the fan regularly speeds up, and as it does it freezes, it also hangs the cursor quite often so I can't move the mouse around, but it seems I can open things, and also things all run rather slow. After I changed it over, I gave my i3 away, without fully testing things, I saw that it came on etc and handed it over.

Now can I sort this with some adjustment to some settings, in the bios maybe? Ive looked in the bios, and it looks very basic to a normal bios, I can't seem to change anything really, . Any thoughts on that?

Could the i7 be faulty?

Or could the problem be that my Toshiba just can't handle the i7 properly?

The original i3 is only about £5 on ebay, so could put one back in.. Or should I try buying another i7 to see if it is faulty, or even going for an i5 or something?
Any thoughts? apart from buy a new laptop.
There was nothing really wrong with the i3, but like most people, I just wanted to tinker, and know it had the best it could have.

thanks for reading

Its overheating for sure. I'm assuming you resat the heatsink with new TIM; from memory OEM builds tend to use crap or even a pad.

Bext to clean up the HSF remove any paste from the cpu, reappy TIM and reset the HSF.

If it still overheats then the HSF isn;t good enough and you will need to grab one, I'm sure somebody here could donate you a spare retail one which would be good enough for that CPU.

You have got be careful when fitting the heatsink to those mobile chips as they have heat shield and the cooler is in direct contact with die.

As above, check your CPU temps with real temp or some other program and see what happens when you stress your CPU out, then leave it ideal for 20 mins. If temps stay high when ideal the look at replacing the thermal compound and reseating the cooler.

hi guys.
thanks for the replys

using real temp its saying idling around 45 - 55 average Id say, it keeps jumping. then I opened premier and imported a sequence, and it can go up to mid 70s to mid 80s, hit 90 at one point. is that running a little hot idling?

Ill try reseating it, Yup I used new paste when fitting it. Interesting about the heatsink fan. Might someone have one I could buy. how to I find one that will fit in my laptop? I hadn't thought about this option. Are they upgradable?

thanks again

It's a laptop. Can you even upgrade the heatsink on a laptop?

You need to try something as that's way too hot. Maybe the laptop just can't handle the extra heat and that's why it only had a i3. Were there versions that had a i5 or i7 cpu installed? Have you tried updating the bios? It would seem 3.60 is the latest. At a guess though I would say it's too much heat for the heatsink to get rid of. Playing with the power settings in Windows may improve things a little.

thanks for all the advice guys,
I got hold of some cool laboratory liquid ultra, cleaned the fan a bit, and drilled lots of holes under the fan and where the CPU is. I also cut back the plastic around the top of the fan, under the keyboard. the temps now go as low as 17 on idle, average around mid 40s, never really go above 50, and the max, with a big load was around 60 momentarily.
The fan doesn't go crazy, and so far nothings hanging. So fingers crossed its all sorted and I've got to keep the i7!
