We had a friend of mine round last night for me to sort something out on his laptop. It was a 17" Dell, and basically my wife got hold of it, had a go, and has now declared that she wants one the same size.

So I've had a look around and settled on a toss up between these two:

Acer Aspire 9301AWSMi for £294 inc

Windows Vista Home Premium - 80 GB Hard Drive - 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM - 17 in. WXGA CrystalBrite Display LCD –Built in WiFi
DVD -Super Multi
Modem 56K
Wireless 802 11b/g
nVidia GeForce Go 6100 Graphics –
Built in Camera and Mic
Mains adapter

Or this one:

Toshiba EQUIUM P200D-139 for £272 inc

AMD ATHLON 1.8GHz X2 DUAL-CORE
2 GIG DDR2 RAM
80GB SATA HARD DRIVE
17" WXGA + TRUBRITE WIDESCREEN
DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER MULTI DRIVE
ATI RADION GRAPHICS
LAN
MODEM
WIRELESS 802.11 B/G
FIREWIRE. IEEE 1394
6 X USB 2.0
VGA OUT
S-VIDEO OUT
5 IN 1 CARD READER

Which do you reckon is better? The Acer has a webcam integrated but I'm not really concerned about that as I have one going spare.

Any thoughts on build quality, general performance etc would be appreciated.

TIA.

Not that i can answer your question very well, but what are the capabilities of the graphics cards in the laptops? I.E. 64 meg etc.

I assume they are second hand?

Tosh over Acer any day for build quality/support. Wouldn't trust acer again after the 4 units we've got have had awful support.

I agree, the build quality of Acer's laptop range are appauling. Also, I'd have to say that Toshiba's styling is much better than that found in an Acer.
