My budget was £500-£600, The only grip I have is that I have seen 1080p on my mates 32" sony and I couldn't tell the diff between that and my 720p set on blu-ray.

Is 1080p on a 37" worth it considering I sit between 5ft-12ft away, depending where I sit in my room.

Sorry, prob need to expand on this. My knoweledge of tellys isn't fantastic. Im assuming my new pre-order has HDMI 1.3? Is it 100hz?

Sorry for being thick.

1080p is only really noticeable above 40". But even still, it should look better than 720p on Blu-Ray, so i wouldn't worry about it.

I didn't think you could get 1080p on 32" LCD's

Just check the Toshiba website... I'm pretty sure the X model isn't 100hz though, think you need the Z variant for that.

yeh my mates sony is 1080p 32"

so at 37" im gonna see some gain on 1080p?

Never owned a Tosh before were the 2007 models at the £600ish price good quality?

If any Tosh owners could comment that woul;d be great!

SO you pre-ordered a tv without even seeing what sort of picture it can display  ?

O and 1080p is a waste of time and money unless you sit within 5-6ft of a 42 inch set, or under 8ft from a 50 inch set. Our eyes just don't have the resolution to see the differences, and it is important to focus on picture quality NOT number of pixels. Why do you think the 720p pioneer sets get soo much praise, and are the best tvs out there if 1080p was the be all and end all.

If you are going to solely game then probably get an LCD. But standard tv viewing, dvds (upscaled or not), and HD movies will look far superior on a good plasma.

How much are good plasmas? My budget is £600 max.

I run one MCE comp via DVI > HDMI, PS3 for gaming and blu-ray & a will via component.

Is plasma best? How does it fair for games? Any ghosting?

What are the pioneer model numbers you recommend?

I feel that at my budget there all gonna be much of a muchness, so I ordered. From my experience the large stores in the average retail park never have them setup correctly anyway so viewing them there is totally pointless.

Majority of Plasmas up to 50" are actually 1024x768, rather than 1280x720. So technically they are not 720p, but still display it better than some LCD's. To be honest, i cant see how a good LCD which is 1080p will have less quality than a less than 720p Plasma.

For SD stuff, Plasma is better because it doesn't need to upscale the picture as near as an LCD would do, also Plasmas tend to have better motion handling.

As mentioned, LCD's are a lot better for gaming and shouldn't give you any ghosting. I have never had experience with Plasmas, but i would prefer to have a 1080p image on my Samsung LE40M86BD rather than less that 720p (horizontally) on a Plasma.

Really depends on what you are viewing most. I probably should have gotten a Plasma cause i watch a lot of SD Sky. But the LCD is far from unbareable. Sure its not as good as my old CRT TV for picture, but it still looks decent.

Ok cool, well the panasonic 42inch PX70 or the new PX80 are the tvs to look at as they are around your budget. E-mail in trust if you need to ask about locations of said tvs, or to discuss the weather ;)

How come you are using component for PS3, much much better to get a HDMI cable?

Plasma is still a better all round tv, with LCD only saving grace imo being gaming. I took my PS3 into 'big department store' and hooked it up to the 1080p panasonic pz70 and pioneer 4280XD (the one I bought), and it looked soo much better than on my parents Toshiba 42X3030 LCD.

Pioneer 4280XD can be had for £1167 (search over at avforums), but that is obviously out of budget. But the panasonic plasmas are the best value tvs out there and from my extensive comparisons, ****** (wee'd ;)) all over the other tvs I saw. I spent 2 months comparing sets, and discounted LCDs very early on.

Your right there, but what I did was go into various stores and got the remote so I could change the settings for a more realistic picture, using printouts from the various tv owners threads at avforums.

Your jsut getting hung up on technical specs. Go and compare a pioneer 4280 and say sony 1080p 40inch set with blu-rays from about 6-8ft. This would be normalish viewing distance, but that could be even higher (Im at 12ft). The resolution meant nothing and the pioneer still made the other sets I saw look very ordinary. I compared the panasonic PZ70 42inch and pio 4280XD, IN GREAT DEPTH with my PS3 hooked up to them (a good 2 hours in a store). The pansonic was £400 less, but the PQ on the pio swayed me, especially the blacks, as the panasonics blacks looked grey in comparison. But what was astonishing is that the panasonic was a 1080p set, and from normal viewing distance (+6ft), then pioneer had just a better picture.

For SD stuff, Plasma is better because it doesn't need to upscale the picture as near as an LCD would do, also Plasmas tend to have better motion handling.

O ye, much better there, especially noticable in movies.

LCDS arn't a lot better. I play a lot of games and after going back to the parents house, their LCD still looks worse than the pioneer. I also plugged my PS3 into a samsung LCD when I was doing my comparisons, but was not happy with the picture for blu-ray or gaming, that I unplugged it rather quickly. I have been round a few peoples houses whom have both had 32inch sammy LCDs, and they had all contrast, colour, and brightness settings up soo high I persuaded them to let me change the settings a bit, which still didn't help them display anything other than a blocky and un-realistic picture.

Damn I do sound like one hell of a fanboy for plasmas, but in he tests I conducted in a number of stores, each with different SD feeds, blu-ray players, plus with my own PS3, and improved settings, LCDs are still relegated to cheap 32inch,40inch sets for gaming only in kids bedrooms. If it will involve even 50% of the tvs use as watching 'tv' then going plasma is a no brainer.

Not the most comrehensive reply, sorry, rushign it out whilst I am supposed to be working :D

I'm really tempted to give my M86 back and get a 42" Plasma myself. But i just dont like the idea of something below HD coming from 1080p. I know its not as easy as that, but of course i would like to see a side by side comparison of my M86 with a Plasma. I have started to notice ghosting in Blu-Rays on my M86, so i think my TV is one of the faulty ones. The M86/M87's are very prone to this it would seem :(

Im not that knowledgable about those screens, but I do remember hearing of a number of annoying problems with them.

Please just trust me, pixels do not = better PQ. A company like pioneer can't charge a £400+ premium on their 720p only screens e.g. 4280XD or equivalent 50" unless they look very very special compared to the other tvs on the market. With regard to the 1080p marketing hype that soo many people are sucked in by, Il let this amazing graph do all the talking, and hopefully It will influence your choices :D

Hmmmm its possible i'm just really susceptible to ghosting but i noticed it so much on the m86 screens (40+46in), even more than any other lcd's. When i saw it in the shop, even running a blue ray (fantastic four) the motion handling i felt was the worst in the shop, worse than the le37r87bd (older samsung lcd model ) samsung for sure. I also felt the 50" Q97 series plasma ghosted a fair bit also yet the Q97 Samsung 42" plasma was fantastic to me (anyone got any explaination for this? they obviously have different panels as one is 1024x768 while the other is 1368x768) , so i bought the 42" one and have been really pleased on both standard def / high def and the little bit of ps3 gaming i've seen has looked great too.

It just seems a great allrounder for £600-£620 imo.

I don't its a typo. I have an MCE PC via DVI>HDMI, PS3 via HDMI, a Nintendo Wii via component & my "gaming" rig via VGA.

I still have this Tosh on pre-order, i'll research plasma's tonight and cancell the tosh if this panasonic gets good reviews. I also need to research plasmas in general, I saw one of the first plasma's in a shop years ago and it totally put me off, the gaps inbetween the pixels were the size of full stops.

I'll mail your trust

It should be pointed out that I watch a lot of DVD's, *cough* home divx content. Recorded freeview channels, with some blu-ray watching and abit of ps3 gaming.

Im expecting to watch increasing amounts of blu-ray over DVD.

So is plasma the daddy specifically the Panasonic Viera 42" TH42PX80B HD Ready Widescreen Plasma TV?

I dunno if i can stretch this fay its 800 quid on a site i use, £200 over budget!!

Been reading on LCD v Plasma and it seems plasma's still suffer from screen burn & dim over time. Apparently LCD is better from PC use & consoles.

Given that I'm hooking it up to a meda pc & two consoles, plasma seems a no go.

yea i think your totally on the right track with your choiceat a great price. Sorry i went off topic before:)

37" 1080p be great :) wouldnt mind it myself

Not at all bob. I was actually considering that sammy, its the 1080p one right?

It was £30 more expensive than this Tosh, thats the only reason I didn't get it.

I currently own a 26" dammy and am very pleased with it. Only thing thats a downer is that it only has 1 x HDMI port, at the time this wasnt a prob as I never intednded on buying a ps3. I bought a ps3 in Feb as I was that hacked off with powerdvd for blu-ray.

In hind sight I should have waited a year and bought my telly later, that why I wouldn't have to buy a second one so soon :(

Cant wait to see blu-ray/ ps3 games on a 37" screen Just intime for GTA4 :)

Now to source an affordable wall mount.......
