First of all don't laugh :o

I've got hold of one of these and want to somehow upgrade it for a present.

Code:

Its currently got 1GB ram within it, I've got another on its way.

I want to upgrade the processor but finding it incredibly difficult to find one that will work. Its got an Intel Celeron M Processor 410 with a clock speed of 1.46GHz which sucks. If at all possible, I'd like to stick a duo in but thats the thing, I don't think its possible any help getting the most powerful processor for this is much appreciated.

Mobo and CPU info from CPU-Z below,

The HDD currently in place runs 5400RPM. I'm looking to upgrade that too, 7200RPM.

can people please help me/advise me on upgrading the processor. admittedly, the ATI chipset is proving a problem, if it had an Intel chipset I'd be up and away with a duo.. I think. again any help is much appreciated.

1.6Ghz/1M/533FSB Core Duo T2060 will work, can't guarantee anything better. It'll be limited by the vendor BIOS rather than the chipset.

RE: the "don't laugh" comment, yeah I know this is a snobbish enthusiast forum but not everyone conforms to the stereotype :p

Thats the thing, Toshiba wont tell me anything about BIOS. They keep going on about cooling etc. which is correct but BIOS info should surely be available to know which processors are compatible and which are not.

That T2060 you speak of, is the same socket type. I just done a quick google search and stumbled upon a link that states its different, I'm not sure though. 2 cores at 1.66GHz, thats total? Can I push it any further? Sorry to be a pain but Vista alone eats away at the processor, basic multi tasking is non existent. I could change OS but I'd like it running its cert.

Is there any way possible to obtain BIOS info to know for which processors are compatible?

http://ark.intel.com/products/28021/Intel-Pentium-Processor-T2060-(1M-Cache-1_60-GHz-533-MHz-FSB)

Nothing there about multiple sockets.

The Core\Core 2 line were compatible with P4 chipsets as well (the Intel 865 being one example, hence there being LGA775 AGP motherboards) so I don't see why having the ATI RS400 chipset is an issue. I tested the same Toshiba model with a T2060 myself...and the Asus A9RP with the same chipset also works with the 2060.

The OEMs cut corners with processor support to keep them cheap I guess, or to force people to buy the more expensive higher-spec models rather than upgrade.

sr4470 thank you man, your help is much appreciated. Is the T2060 the limit or is it possible to push it a little more. will i see a dramatic change? the T2060 are not that expensive so even a slight improvement will make a change.

You'll get better multitasking with a dual core, and some performance boost from the higher clockspeed.

sr4470, out of these two, the one you recommend and the following which would you pick...

Code:
[B]T1350[/B]
[URL="http://ark.intel.com/products/27243/Intel-Core-Solo-Processor-T1350-(2M-Cache-1_86-GHz-533-MHz-FSB)"]http://ark.intel.com/products/27243/Intel-Core-Solo-Processor-T1350-(2M-Cache-1_86-GHz-533-MHz-FSB)[/URL]

and those two are the only two options I have upgrade wise?

The T2060, I haven't tested the Core Solo so I don't think it will work.

i'm confused, your saying one thing, someone else is saying another. the other is saying that single T1350 will be sufficient because all apps don't use both cores T2060? bit confused as I thought processing would be processing?

i got a reply on toshibas forum from a member ...

I found follow info:

The Satellite L30 (ATI Platform) series are 2 spindle PCs running an Intel Celeron-M processor.
Microprocessor that is used will be different of the model.
It supports Celeron-M as follows
Intel Dothan Celeron M
360J (1.40GHz)
370 (1.5GHz)
380 (1.6GHz)
L1 cache : 64KB (32KB + 32KB)
L2 cache : 1MB
Front side Bus : 400MHz
Core voltage : 1.004–1.292V

However, the notebook seems to be equipped with an Intel PENTIUM M-745 (DOTHAN-1.8) CPU. In this case you could use the CPu from this family
Pentium M 710 (1.4 GHz), 715 (1.5 GHz), 725 (1.6 GHz), 735 (1.7 GHz), 740 (1.73 GHz), 745 (1.8 GHz), 750 (1.86 GHz), 755 (2.0 GHz), and 765 (2.1 GHz).

does that change anything as in the two options i have?

also...

You can try to install an hardware diagnostic tool like Everest Home Edit or Sandra Software in order to get more details about chipset.
But of course there could be always an BIOS compatibility issue… but I could not find any details regarding the BIOS support.

should i post more info from everest?

You said the Celeron M 140 sucks yet you are considering going for a T1350 which is likely to only be around 30% faster which isn't really that much better.

The difference with a dual core CPU however is substantial especially the overall responsiveness of the laptop will be greatly improved.

thats what i was thinking but been told different by someone else. i'm by no mean disrespecting you knowledge and help given here. just a bit confused. I've got aida64 installed, i'll post a log in a second.

Regardless of the individual applications you are using, multitasking alone is improved by a dual core processor. The fact that Windows can run a process or application on the second core when the first is busy drastically improves responsiveness. Also, by upgrading from a Celeron, you'll gain speedstep capability that will clock down the processor during low usage and save battery power (as well as reduce fan noise and heat output).

I have no idea why he\she said that, your model doesn't use those processors. They're not even electrically compatible with the socket.

No need. If you're still not convinced, feel free to search through Toshiba's discontinued products at their website. The L30-1xx range, of which your specific model is a part, only shipped with Celeron M 400 series processors.

You said the Celeron M 410 sucks yet you are considering going for a T1350 which is likely to only be around 30% faster which isn't really that much better.

They're also likely to be more expensive than the Core Duo T2060, which is only a few quid at auction.

I had a laptop with a T1300 in it and it was usable but slow and multi-tasking slowed it to a crawl but it didn't support dual core CPUs so there wasn't much I could do about it. I also built a mini-itx system with a Celeron 430 and 2GB DDR2 with onboard graphics but it was too slow so I upgraded it to a dual core 2140 and it was much more responsive.

You might want to considering buying a T2060 and a T1350 so you can test it for yourself. You should be able to find both on ebay for £10 or so delivered.

ok thank you sr4470 & str. all the other posts are confusing me, I've purchased the T2060 for a few quid. It should be with me by the end of the week. I'll keep this thread updated.

a side note, we all know Vista sucks so with the T2060 and 2GB of RAM it'll somewhat improve. Should it not shall I take a stab at 7 or just put XP on it? Ideally I'd like its cert running obviously.

I've just put win 7 on a Toshiba M60 1.73 pentium M 1GB ram and it runs much better than the XP it shipped with. Admittedly all the Toshiba bloatware may have had an impact but it just feels like a new machine.

cheers beermonster a question or two though.

I have a recovery disk with the laptop, I explored the disk and it hasn't got windows vista install within.. its all coded files which might be some kind of command for files on the laptop already to recover. If I do a fresh install, will I lose the recovery disk functionality? also with it being a laptop, OEM, will my installed need its cert to be loaded correctly or can I put any OEM version on with a valid key and when wanting to go back to vista, will the cert, home vista basic oem version down and burnt work with the key without having to toy with the installer.

there is a lot of bloatware on the laptop already but because of this stupid cert thing within the installer, some need it to run correctly i've held back on fresh installing an OS on it. please advise mate

You can install any os with a valid key no problem, you just need to source the drivers after. The original recovery can then be used later on to put it back to it's original state no problem at all. Original oem software never needs a key typing as the validation is done via the bios.

ok but my original recovery disc doesn't look like a proper windows installer disc as it only shows a few command files but it states the disc is full 2.93GB I've tried the show hidden files option but nothing comes up to be sure there window vista on it. if I put another OS on, i'm not sure whether my original recovery disc will work if I need to revert back.

inside the folders theres a few files and 1 ms-dos file in each. am i safe to switch OS and recovery via the disc should I need to go back to Vista ?
