OK, so after they screwed up a standing order cancellation and I now have to claw back £900 from a recipient myself, I phone up the telephone banking service I enabled off the back of wanting to get rid of my pin sentry device. Without the PIN sentry I can now do everything online apart from adding new payees.

So I phone the telephone banking service and get through to an agent that tells me my passcode was given wrong to start with last time I used the service and she'll have to re-issue a pass code, by post.

I also wanted to change my address.

So, I can't transfer money to my new landlord without a visit to a branch with ID. My nearest branch is a ***** one that closes at 430.

my blood is literally boiling.

All because of this HATEFUL PINSentry crap.

I was happily adding new payees with ease for 7 years before the need for this crap. Am seriously considering changing banks.

anyone else had similar?

PIN sentry was annoying at first, but I don't really mind it now, it's always in my work bag, so I always have it when needed.

Funny thing is that I found mine last night. The batteries were dead and I had only used it twice before. For online banking, I always click the "Not received your PINSentry card reader yet?" link, lol. Although I know that a lot of online banking functionality is disabled when I do so.

what a hateful hateful system

I've always found it pretty easy tbh, and it makes it a lot more difficult to commit fraud. What was the problem you had with PINSentry in the first place anyway? Apart from wanting rid of it.

You failed you security and therefore they won't let you change your address or make transfers, until it is reset. Seems pretty standard to me.

it was the fact I had to have it. I was used to making transfers anywhere I wanted and without having to have a device with me. Then it came along and I was having to wait til I got home if it wasnt with me. I just want unfettered control and access, not sure that's too much to ask.

Hmm, this is interesting. I don't have PinSentry and I haven't added new payees in ages.

So, if I add a payee, they will send me PS and I will have to use it for all subsequent transactions?

I was under the impression it was sent to everyone at least a year ago. try it?

Just conform and accept the pin sentry device then life will be a lot easier.

Sticking it to the man isn't always in your best interest.

well, it gives an extra layer of real security, yes the chances are low of people hacking in, but now without the device and pincode its virtually impossible unless they have your pinsentry, and your code, afaik the pinsentrys are tied to your account, they aren't universal(could be wrong there).

How often, i mean truthfully, do you need to add new payee's, and how often is it time dependant that you do it in a time period that you won't be at home at somepoint to do it. I mean its unlikely you moved in, got a new landlord and needed to make a payment all while at work.

As it seems, you got the code wrong last time you used it, if it wasn't for that, you go home, put in the right code, and it works fine, doesn't seem like a massive deal to me.

But in this rare situation, no different to you forgetting your old login passcode or pin number and needing to wait for a new one, can't you pay by cheque or cash, a different account or just speak to him.

Yes my HSBC account is quicker to get into than my barclays and theres a tiny bit less hassel to using it, if I ever found myself at the point where I need to add payments while at work and not near my pinsentry, I'd make sure I had cash in my HSBC account and use that :o

infact, as I have the hsbc account as a payee saved in my Barclays, I can login and send money I think without the pinsentry and it will be there instantly in my HSBC.

Your bank can't automatically assume you aren't a moron, do you know how many people out there respond to those spam e-mails and log in to fake banking sites giving away their details, every one of those people that log in to fake sites loses the banks money, or risks it, any of those banks have pinsentry or likewise, they can give the other details to whoever they want, they can't take your money.

Likewise frankly the banks would get done for calling their customers stupid if the enabled it only for the idiots that have given out their details, so they simply enabled it on all accounts. You can probably thank the PC brigade for that.

At the end of the day I still can't see your problem, you got the pinsentry code wrong, had you done it with any other code you'd be in the same situation as you are now, it seemingly has nothing to do with the pinsentry process at all.

As for them sending out £900 when told not to, I also can't see why you're having to get that back yourself, frankly if its quicker and easier to do it yourself I would. But they are liable, if you canceled a standing order and they sent it out they are completely and utterly responsible.

It's better than having to remember the 12th character of my password though.

Only downer is you have to take it everywhere with you :(
