I'm what you call an average overclocker but this is my first time overclocking a Sandy Bridge CPU.

I've done the auto overclock option in the BIOS to 4.4Ghz and I prime'd it and it's all OK but is this normal?

Is it really running at 1.6ghz whilst idle?

Yes, thats fine, keeps your electricity bill down when you're surfing and ramps up the multi when your running something intensive.

One final thing, is there any danger in disabling C1E and EIST in the BIOS?

The most intensive thing I use my PC is web browsing but I could have about 40 tabs or so open at once and firefox aint exactly fast these days...

the time it takes for the cpu to go from x16-x44 (or even x50) is fractions of a second, so you would never notice it. why have it running more volts and hotter when it doesnt need to.
