Basically having moved into the room where the cable connection comes in i haev my pc hooked up by cable to the modem. I want to make it so my brother can access the internet and/or my pc and for my mum to access the same when she gets a laptop.

Do i just need something like "Linksys WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband Router/4-Port Switch" and a pci card for my brothers pc and a pcmia card for the laptop?

My mate had the lesser linksys and didnt rate it and i dunno the good the bad or the ugly with makes and types of wifi,be it a,b,g or n or whatnot.

Just spec me what i need for different prices.

Yes, that would do. Bear in mind you'd need the Pre-N wireless cards that go with it to get the full benefit, and it might not upgrade to Proper-N.

Which "lesser Linksys"? The WRT54G/GS? Which version was it? The v5's pretty crummy, but the versions before that are (mostly) decent.

Basically it looks like the one i suggested but without the antennas......like a silver box with green lights on the front.

So we're talking £80 + £60 + £60 for the router,pci card and pcmia card to work on wireless N. :(

Wireless G is like £50 + £20 + £40/50 for a usb stick one.

Would it be noticable really? The other room is like 20ft away through the wall so range isnt that bad and my mum would use her laptop directly above or below me.

So i could go all out on that router and buy a 802.11g pci card and that? That 802.11n card is too expensive at the moment but if its too slow on 802.11g i will look into going 802.11n.

You could, but there isn't a great deal of point, given
  • You can get an 802.11g router for less
  • If you don't use a pre-n card, you don't see much (if any) benefit
  • A good chunk of the pre-n routers won't upgrade to the full 802.11n standard.

Ah ok man cheers for the help.......gonna be running a cat58 cable till my brother can afford it again.

Will go with 802.11g though.
