Total War - Any good for 5 players?

It's over 6 years old.

I installed it last year for a few games and despite a vastly more powerful rig than I had back then it chugs along a bit. Medieval II on the other hand runs really well still and on it's higher settings could pass for a recent release. It's also been heavily modded, with mods available for just about every Era you could hope for.

While I loved Rome back in the day I think the money might be better spent on Medieval II to be honest.

I'd grab Rome, as my mate and I have tried both, and can't seem to get medieval 2 to let us play as a team against the AI where as Rome does, I also prefer the units in Rome.

This.

And ME2 lets you play with your friends against the AI (eg: 5 vs AI)? Jonny L suggests he had trouble?

Tried the demo of Rome and ME2 last night, and I must say the real time battles seemed to play better (from the very limited experience) on Rome?!

Rome also can run in full modern day resolutions in widescreen etc etc, and you can even turn the graphics up etc etc so it's not too far away from ME2.

I also prefer the era of Rome I think too!

So I think I'll go for Rome Gold for £4.99 :)

Rome I think for multi. Rome and ME2 only runs on one core so a 5 player battle might chug with ME2.

Just ran Rome yesterday and with mods you can get it to look ok. On a side note I ran it with nvidia 3d and it looks even more amazing

I only enjoyed Rome + Shogun, the rest were so much pants that I have no interest in Shogun II now. i'd rather just reinstall and play Rome.

Any obvious/recommended mods (single or multilpayer)?

So if should we just install "Total Realism" from the start and play that single/multi-player?

ie: Is is subtle improvement/change to the standard game? Or is it a massive change?

I would suggest you enjoy the plain game for some time. The campaign is awesome, unlock all the nations and The Barbarian Invasion shines on its own.

Rome is really an amazing game, hard to believe it was released in 2004 - way ahead of its time. When you get bored with the standard campaign, I suggest having a look at Roma Surrectum.

Here's a brief description:

Roma Surrectum (meaning "Rome Arises") is a complete remake of the game, both graphically and in its gameplay. Improvements include a new economic system with hundreds of new buildings, an accurate and graphically improved campaign map, massively upgraded battlefield environments with more realistic custom-built vegetation, new factions, 28 unique Roman legions, and over 500 highly detailed and more historically accurate units.

The second one will be even better.

Europa Barbarorum II is also worth a play, dunno which is better of the two tbh - http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=454.

There are also plenty of mods that are placed in different eras if that's what you're interested in.

Seconded, ME2 with mods is fantastic.

YOU CAN'T PLAY CO-OP?

FIVE of us have just ordered this, and it seems you CANNOT play co-op against each other or the AI? Even Rome TW which came out 2-3 years before let you? We thought it was a given, but no... so we've all just wasted our money

How do we get a refund from Steam :( IT'S TERRIBLE!

It's annoying as in my OP one of the only things I asked for was:- "Can you play 2vs3 or even better 5vsAI?"

And people suggest ME2.... So five of us buy it... Only to find out we CAN'T play 2vs3 or 5vsAI :(

And no, Steam don't do refund... So we've all wasted our money as that was the only purpose of the purchase :(

Really!? :O
I would have sworn otherwise! How odd, something to do with steam vs retail versions perhaps??

I'll check it out this evening (I have a retail copy) This has me surprised and confused :S

Emergency over! Two of my friends have just reported back, it can do it! My guess is maybe it was patched in, because by all accounts it was there to start with!?

But there is no AI though like you have in Rome Total War! So you cant have 5vsAI for example. But at least we have have 3vs2 or 2vs2 humans for example! Phew!

Ah, good good :)
Shame about the no multi-vs-AI, but then player-vs-player is always more of a challenge and less predictable ;)

Enjoy!

We had to move to something else because RTW just was reliable in multiplayer. Invariably 2-4 of us could get into a game, but then 1-2 could get in. Real shame :(

Vary rarely could all 5 of us actually start a game togethor.
