I am thinking of playing through these next as i like large scale RTS games with good historical background involved but i am sure which to go with first? i guess it's best to just play them all in order?

Tried Rome: Total War yesterday even though it's old it seems very good still and lot of detail in the game. Also what's a good faction to start with if i am going to play Rome first?

What faction are you interested?
When i play i pick by which faction i like cause of there history.

Yeah i know there is, looks fantastic, was thinking of starting as Gauls but not sure how hard they will be. :p

How long does a campaign take roughly too?30 hours?

I believe when you start the vanilla game you can only choose Rome (unless you have modded/unlocked).

I like to go for the Brutii and slam into Greece/Macedon, but it's slightly harder than some of the others. Julii is always fun conquering Gaul/Hispania etc.

If you have them unlocked I enjoy Greece, it's a challenge to begin with but fun to spread the culture and become great again!
(or Carthage can be fun)

I would suggest playing the games in order only because of the mechanic progression. If you skipped, for example, straight to Napoleon or (to a lesser extent) Shogun 2 you'd find it a bit of a shock.

I'm not a fan of M2TW, the battles frustrate me (mainly the camera and what I call the "foggy" visual style), but the campaign was quite fun at times. I preffered the Spanish taking on the Moors.

Empire is still my favourite of all. Once they patched the worst of the bugs it became my Go-To of the series. Very different using Rifles and Regiments but definitely one for those who like precision and more focuss on positional strategy than some of the "chaaarge" melee games.

(I still consider Napoleon a standalone expansion to Empire - and not as good as it has a limited campaign but some of the mechanics are a little sharper)

Thats what i like about Total War Series they pretty much got all the major histories covered. Personally i thought M2TW was the best, as i put the most hours into that game, thanks to some very good mods. But i think Rome was the most interesting timeline. So ive got high hopes for Rome 2.

THIS! haha
It also has the most Varied factions of them all aswell.

In Medieval the Western/Catholic are pretty much the same and the Eastern/Muslim are pretty much the same.

In the later ones (and especially Shogun 2) it's even worse as there isn't even that distinction! (Empire has Indians and Native Americans but that's about it).

Empire total war with darthmod was my favourite - a great variety in factions & the ship combat is good, it also felt very different when you did a campaign in the Americas, then one based in Europe, then one in India - all a totally different game with lots of different units.

Fall of the samurai ship combat is good too,.

Looking forward to Rome 2 as at the time it was the biggest leap & amazing - just needed more complexity - it's also got some of the best factions of the time (all very different & unique).

Clocked literally hundreds & hundreds of hours in the total war games since the early days of the first Shogun game.

Oh god this thread has made me want to start another campaign on MTW2!

What essential mods should i use? I havent modded it at all yet.

If you own the expansion kindgdoms:

Stainless Steel
Its basically vanilla but with tonnes of improvements.

Third Age
Lord Of The Rings seriously awesome.

Spent hundreds of hours on these two mods. They are expertly done, i would happily pay for them if i had too.

You could rush through one in 30 hours I guess. I wouldn't though.

My campaigns last weeks if not months, and much longer in terms of hours than the 30 you stated.

The more time and effort you put into your campaigns the more enjoyable they become.

I like to see a plan come together!!!

200-250 turns is usally the average amount of turns for the average Total War player according to Creative. Which sounds about right to me, although i do like to turtle a bit and can usually go up too 300+.

Stainless Steel is a good mod for M2TW... I think it needs the expansion though if I remember correctly.

Ta

Just got home from work and realised my MTW2 disc ( i do have kingdoms as well) are at my parents house :(. I thought they were on my Steam account but clearly not...

I always go back to Rome, fantastic game.

Only thing I dislike about it (and most others) is the constant city rebellion for no reason when you get larger empires. Always frustrated me!
