Total War: Warhammer 40,000

I'm a huge 40k fan but even I can't get excited about TW. Luckily I have DOW to look forward to though.

Trailer was cool though, bar the predictable UM.

I never really clicked with the TW games, but this one I’d really like to get into. W40K definitely my thing.

Same, always too far zoomed out of the action to appreciate it but if they've considered this then I'll try it in years to come once they've milked the early adopters paying for inevitable drawn out faction and unit DLC.

Yeah I'm expecting a lot of DLC, but I mind as long as it's not too pricey as it just funds continued development. There's only SM, Aeldari, Ork, and IG, that were announced so that's about 15~ more factions (counting all SM as single faction and CSM as another one) that are unannounced or will come as DLC.

I reckon they'd stoop as low as to sell DLC for individual SM chapters along with a hero maybe. Will keep an eye out anyway, just because I don't like any of the previous TW games doesn't mean this one couldn't be the exception.

Damn, this interests me but whether or not I play it is another matter. I loved Medieval TW, and had been waiting my whole life for a good WH RTS when Total Warhammer was released...and yet I barely played it!

Still, while DoW4 looks decent I have reservations, so I'll be keeping a close eye on both.

I think across the three Warhammer Fantasy Total War games there's now over 25 items of paid DLC, so this will definitely be a DLC fest

Fully expect we'll get a few games out of this too, similar to Warhammer - rather than loads of new faction DLCs, we'll get games 2 and 3 with 4 or 5 new factions each time focusing on a 'new' specific conflict scenario

Will be interesting to see how the two (DOW and Total War) differentiate from each other.

From the trailer, this certainly looks like a bit of an overhaul to the usual Total War mechanics.

The drip feed of new factions and dlc will be tiresome, as usual.

Dawn of War is more of the 'traditional' RTS mechanics with some base building, specific missions and scenarios following a story etc. I think?

Whereas this I would expect to follow the traditional TW mechanics - a massive 'galaxy map' where you're moving fleets and armies about between planets (we get a brief glimpse of this at the end), with large scale pitched battles of those forces wherever they conflict.

It's a little disappointing that they both launch with Space Marines and Orks as 2 of their 4 factions but I guess on 'mass appeal' basis, those are the two big hitters from 40K.

Yeh, but Relic have played around with the idea of grander strategy/world map mechanics before, especially with Company of Heroes. Though from early reports it does sound like Dawn of War might just be a more traditional set of missions.

On the faction thing, I never thought Orks were that popular to be honest, yet they often tend to be the starter faction in all these games.

Very excited by the announcement, I think the last TW I played was the first Warhammer one, which was pretty decent but lacking on factions unless you went all in with the DLC (which I never got around to doing). It does feel a bit of weird timing given that we are getting DOW 4 too, hopefully they can really show off the scale and grand theatre of war that you can get from TW games to differentiate it a bit. Lots of potential I think, both to impress and disappoint, so fingers crossed.

The DLC list is also going to be miles long for this, holy cow.

The tiny amount of gameplay shown looked rubbish to me, more of a RTS style battle than a Total War style game

So late 2026 or early 2027 release?

Obv: early days, trailers never show how the game actually plays, keep watching

Ok now this has peaked my interest a lot, I have space marine 2 which I'm going to play through soon as well which looks amazing

Some notes from their website/forum:
  • They have a small roundtable with developers in a few days (16th) with some insights on the project (but no major news).
  • They are kicking off gameplay and campaign deep dives from next spring.
  • You can Exterminatus worlds in the game.
  • There's full modding support through Steam workshop and official modding tools.
  • No Chaos Space Marines at launch.
  • There's not going be pre-order DLC.
  • It's built on their new Warcore engine.
  • Quote on potential "dumbing down" of the game for consoles: " We understand that some of you will have concerns about how we approach console development, and that’s completely natural. Rest assured, PC remains at the very core of our design ethos, as it has done for the past 25 years. Throughout this journey, we’ve been working hand in hand with experienced Total War players to ensure that what we develop continues to deliver the same immersive, authentic, and tactically rich experiences you’ve come to expect from the franchise. "
  • There's no blood pack DLC, it's just blood/gore by default.
Given deep dives are from next spring I'd say early-ish 2027 for release.
