Totally clueless about speakers

So I'm looking for some speakers to install throughout the house, eg kitchen, living room, one bedroom. I don't mind portable but must have a good battery life as we tend to play music for several hours per 'sitting'.
I'll be using Google Cast Audio with all of them because I'm bringing back a Google Home from a NY trip.

My biggest concern is power costs, so I don't want to switch on each speaker individually, but i also don't want them left on 24/7. More, they go into an idle mode & switch on when receiving a signal to play music...something along the lines of that.

Budged for 3 speakers + Google cast audio will be up to £500. On a side note we don't play loud music or base, just a background sort of thing.

So you will be using the Chromecast music dongles?

If so any decent powered speakers with a aux input should suffice.

Yes, but how does the power saving/modes work? Like I said, I don't want to turn the speakers on individually, can they remain in a standby mode?

I know my Creative T40's go into sleep mode after about 10 mins and will wake from a signal after about 2mins but you would have to check with each speaker manufacturer on the market.
