Totally confused on which monitor to go for

Hey,

I'm wanting a 20-22" (Possibly 24" if my budget can stretch a little, which it probably can't yet) I've been decided/undecided so many times. :p

The monitor will be used for game & web development, so it obviously has to have reasonable colour reproduction, but also clear/sharp text because I usually work in VS 4-5 hours a day, plus maybe some xbox 360 (I know only the 2407WFP will be able to do true 1080p, and possibly the only one to do 1:1 pixel mapping, not sure).

At the moment I'm torn between:

Dell E228WFP 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black -- £230
Samsung SM-226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black -- £265
LG L226WTQ 22" -- Definitely not this one anymore.
-
Dell 2407WFP A04 -- £450

Which would you go for out of those (Or any others)? I basically have no idea what one I want to go for, there aren't even any decent computer shops around where I live to test any of them out.

Is the 2407WFP worth almost double?

Please give any suggestions, I've read so many mixed/(?biased) reviews I think I've confused myself even more.

Thanks!

edit; I also only have a 640MB 8800 GTS so that probably won't cut it for native-res 1920x1200 (on the 24") games anyway.

Well if I was you, save some more money etc & buy the Dell 24" I plan on mine lasting me 4 years so I will make use of the guarantee. :)

I only upgraded from a 17" Monitor to 19" over around 18 months ago & to be honest it wasnt a big enough difference in size. . . if you go for the 24" it will be a better long term investment in my opinion, thats why I didnt go for a 22".

Thats my opinion anyway, their is plenty of people using 8800 GTS with 24" TFT's so I dont think it will be a problem. :)

I'm in the same boat. I bought a cheap 22" LCD and to be honest it wasn't very good. The main reason being the lack of DVI - my eyes just couldn't handle 60HZ over VGA after being used to a much higher refresh rate on my 19" CRT.

I then thought 'what the hell' and bought a supposedly new Dell 2407WFP off an auction site. It was nowhere near new - 1000 hours on the service menu plus other imperfections. I've sent it back for a refund.

Now I'm looking at the LG 226 as it is well priced and available, but I'm not sure I could take that 'step down' having been spoilt by the Dell.

Anyone know how significant the difference would be between the 2407 and the mentioned 22" options?

The 2407WFP is better than all the monitors you've mentioned. Your card should allow you to play native res on a 24" screen.

My card is a 7600GS which I realise is not the best ever but I generally only play strategy games (Civ IV being my favorite) so I am not taxing it too much. It does look fantastic as 1920x1200 though!

I'm still on Windows XP, so will maybe upgrade to Vista and a better DX10 card later in the year.

Do you have any experience of the 22" models referenced compared to the 2407.

I don't want to buy a LG 226 for example and then find out I've made a bad decision. The problem with monitors is that there is nowhere you can really go and compare different models at the same time.

I've never had any of the 22" models but if you're planning on buying a better card in the future then for the 2407 - you won't regret getting the extra inches and its a solid all round monitor.
