Ok guys, my current gaming rig (see sig) is starting to feel its age ...just a little ;)

I am thinking it is time to rebuild, but having been so happy with the performance of my current rig I haven't felt the need to keep up to speed re chipsets, AMd Vs Intel.

So, what is the most popular gaming, performance motherboard and CPU config these days?

I hear AMD are making in roads in Intels once formidable Core 2 Duo line up what is the latest ofering like (i7)?

Obviously I will be keeping my current Silverstone case and possibly the HX620 PSU (if this is still up to the job of current GFx cards needs)?

It took me many weeks to decide on my current mobo, which had many teething problems being the first of the X38 chipsets, so I am rather unwilling to be an early adopter (aka guinea pig :D) this time around.

I tend to only rebuild every 2-3 years so any mobo spec will have to be as "future proof" as possible.

Help appreciated :)

I am not totally set on upgrading, obviously I don't do it for the hell of it, only if there is a real performance increase to be had.

Just read some stuff on the CPU board and it would seem there isn't that much difference between my Q6600 and the new stuff, ok they are pushing 4 GHz more often than not, but hey not light years away.

I guess with the advent of Windows 7, the latest ATI cards only weeks away and DX11, that along with Abit going bust :mad:...... I was sort of feeling out-dated :D perhaps a simple gfx upgrade would suffice !
 
I have hit the wall with the CPU, I tried many weeks to eeek a little more out of it, but my board just won't let me go higher with stability, so basically 24/7 running with good temps at 3.2 GHz is what I settled for (knocked it down for summer from the 3.4 GHz).

The mobo is a little fragile at times, to the extent that I have not gone to newer bios's as it can be flaky, so the old addage of if it isn't broke........ applies.

so, I guess for now, I am staying put, will upgrade the Gfx card....the 3870x2 is one weak point of the system.
 
Oh and I guess the whole thing which started my brain going was the recovery from a power cut this morning took around an hour....CMOS clear, remove 2 of the 4 sticks of ram (never liked first boot with 4, but after that its fine) and the discovery that the ATi 4870x2 needs a mobo bios upgrade as there is a bug.....perhaps I am just being picky :D
