Hi all, I recently bought a new pc with a Z97 SOC, 980TI sli and 4790k, the system runs beautifully even after stress testing the GPU, CPU, RAM and everything else, but I have a very random problem.

No matter what im doing it seems like, once every few hours it will just turn itself off but instantly turn back on again, like a total hard reset, it's really hard to pin point the problem because all windows event viewer states is there was a Kernel-Power error but it doesnt link it to anything specific

Does anyone have any advice on how to isolate it? it happens so rarely that its hard to take out a component and test it that way as I could be waiting hours if not days! :(

sounds like potentially a problem with the PSU. My old PSU behaved this way before I replaced it. If this is a new build, do you have an old PSU that you would be able to swap in to see if it still does it?

I do have an old PSU I can test with luckily, its a Supernova G2 though which are usually very reliable, but if it happens again I will swap it out and give it a test with the old one which I know works flawlessly

No BSOD, just an instant shutdown and it powers back on instantly, normally it just boots to windows with no issues but one time it mentioned that windows couldnt launch and gave me options to load optimized defaults in BIOS etc but then after that it was on its merry way again

And im running 2 sticks of 4gb Samsung Green ram at default timings and speed, and the bios is updated to it's latest firmware

It is literally an entirely random thing, I cant pin it down to anything, if it happens again ill change the PSU and run one GPU first and see how that goes, if it still happens ill swap RAM sticks etc, but im just hoping it was some incredibly random error that irons itself out as these things sometimes do

Sorry for the bump but ive just run Memtest and so far its on 287 errors and its only just started its second pass, I thought RAM usually gives a BSOD if its causing issues, but could this be the culprit then?

sometimes it can just shutoff

tried with just one ram stick and memtest, then test the other stick on its own, could have a faulty ram stick somewhere

Tried both sticks of ram seperately, in two different slots, both reporting errors, they seemed to work fine in my old PC but maybe they're just not up to scratch now? :(

try with the dram set to 1.55v in the bios then see if they still crop up errors,

have lots of that ram on a z68/77 systems and its fine, you just might need to up the dram voltage a little

77 Errors on the hammer test at both 1.5 and 1.55v, and this time when loading into windows after it explorer.exe hung and rebooted itself, took about 20/25 seconds, does that sound like the ram being a bit funny to you?

Yeh the motherboard itself seems to run fine, ive thrown every stress test I can at it and it's running just fine so I cant imagine its the motherboard? and its just the regular SOC which only has the F6 bios on the gigabyte website

could try the f7a beta, can always flash back to f6 if its no better

either ram or poor bios support if its throwing up errors like that,or dram or memory controller voltage but usually you don't have to mess with those, esp at stock ram speed

Yeh ive just updated now, we'll see how it goes. What are the odds its the actual mobo itself? it boots fine, it runs everything fine so surely for it to just randomly turn itself off every few hours that sounds like its more of a RAM/PSU issue i'd guess? the PSU seems rock solid but im at a bit of a loss at the moment!, lets hope it was just the F6 bios and the F7a fixes the issue! :)

well the ram shouldn't be throwing any errors

it could be ram or bios bug idk tell you test things, doubt its the board or psu,but could test with spare psu just to rule it out

Yeh ill keep testing, if a GPU was failing it's more likely to just driver crash and artifact isnt it? I cant imagine it would send the whole system offline

To add on to this, my screen just flashed black and instantly came back and then the mouse and windows were moving more slowly like they was minimizing/maximizing in a less fluid way and my mouse was visibly less fluid, any ideas if theyre related?
