My mother is looking to replace her out-of-date laptop.

She has a budget of around £700, and her requirements aren't too great apart from the first one:
* a touch screen
* light
* something larger than 10" (she has a 15" now, but 13" or so would probably be fine)
* the ability to edit word and excel files
* play casual games like bejewelled
* run facebook apps
* ideally running windows 7, but not essential

Also, the longer battery life the better.

Any suggestions?

Buy an iPad and a cheap laptop. I havent seen too many touchscreen devices running Windows that amount to much more than niche products or gimics.

I'm not slating Windows 7 here, I just dont think anyone has leveraged the platform properly.

A 16Gb iPad and an entry level laptop would give the ultimate flexibility. Heck, most of what she wants can be accomplished on the iPad.

It's not for me, otherwise I;d do that (but I wouldn't get the ipad, I'd get an android tablet). But my mum is pretty adamant that she doesn't want a tablet.

She really liked the look of this touch screen laptop, but it doesn't seem to be available anywhere:
Acer Aspire 5738 644G32Mn

Anything similar to that, but in a slightly smaller form factor (say, 13-14")

Maybe a HP Touchsmart TX2?

I'm not a huge fan but you're heading into niche territory and won't have much choice.

A few years back I had a Toshiba Portégé M700 "tablet" (back when Tablet meant a touch screen laptop running Tablet Editions of Windows).

The screen rotates so the notebook can be closed with the screen facing outward, you get a wacom stylus so that graphic tablet/design/drawing work is very intuitive, it was core 2 duo based with 4GB of RAM, ran Win 7 easily (with aero), and was 13". Standard battery would get you 5-6hr of use, the extended battery took that to 8-9hrs!

I'd either look around for a used/refurbished one of those, or see how much the current equivalent is (M780 are still available I think). At the time though it was £1300~ so used might have to be the direction in which you go for this.
