I am currently using a touchspeed 330 modem which came with my broadband supplier. It has serve me well getting good speeds over the years but it is beginning to play up.

So what should I get as an upgrade from this. I am not interested in wireless so I wired modem/router is what I am after.

I do not know anything about routers or what they offer over a modem so can someone put me in the right direction? I mainly use it for gaming so is a router the better option?

And is usb the best way to connect?

Thanks

You mean a SpeedTouch 330 USB?

No, just about the worst.

A router (or more to the point, any connection over ethernet) offers complete OS independence (if you can get drivers for your network card, you've got an internet connection - does the 330 have Vista drivers yet?), no reliance on the host machine for power (that USB modem doesn't get its power from the air, y'know, and some machines have hassle with how much it draws).
And that's just for starters.

The Netgear DG834 is fairly popular.
Even if you don't use the wireless (before someone has a go, I should point out the DG834 doesn't have wireless but this is a general point), the difference in price is normally not huge, and you can disable it. I'd suggest searching this forum.

Ok so which do you recommend that I get. I dont mind getting wireless just though a wired one would be better connection.

My only problem is that I dont want to spend too much money on it as I have only just upgraded some parts and the misses wouldnt be too happy ;)

Thanks for all your advice so far. Appreciated!
