For the last few years, i have been in and out of low pay, dead end jobs. Low skilled thus low pay.

I have attempted to go down the IT career pathway but haven't been able to get a foot in the door. I have an HNC in computing and few other IT related qualifications but no experience. Few helpdesk jobs here and there, some of them kinda tech related (sky equipment and helping troubleshoot chip and pin terminal hardware and software) but no direct it jobs like windows etc.

I recently applied for a Smart meter trainee position with SSE online.
Great opportunity, great money and benefits. Fully paid training and certs through the company.
Genuinely interested in the company and the way it is handling itself regarding renewables. I am excited at the prospect of a career with them and gaining a trade.

Anyway, i applied online, I then did a psychometric test online followed by a technical assessment online.
I had a telephone interview last week and found out I passed today.

I was then given the opportunity to book myself into an assessment day.
The downside is the assessment centre is near London, I assumed there would be one closer to home as training is done an hour away in Perth but apparently not at the moment.

I was informed I can wait until an assessment day opportunity pops up here in Scotland (could be months and months away)or I can travel down 7/8 hours next week. Won't be getting any reimbursement so will be out of my own pocket, struggling with finances and working full time so it's a big gamble spending £100 in fuel and taking a day off work.

Has anyone had any experience in this line of work and what is the furthest you would travel for an interview (not day to day work)

Someone I know dropped out of the RAF to do it and seems to be better off financially as well as having a much better work/life balance.

To be honest £100 for the potential at a much brighter future is nothing and you're better off getting it done now than waiting months or even a year. I wouldn't say it's a big gamble at all, you're just naturally nervous at the prospect.

Thanks for the replies. I know it's not a lot of money to most and you are entirely right it would be the best 100quid spent if I get the job.

I don't think so Ace, the centre is in Thatcham so factor in bus/taxis on top of flight it's probably cheaper driving. It's after 1400 so I can travel early doors and get back up late evening so no need for hotels etc.

I know the Thatcham site - i lived in Newbury for years and my wifes parents live in Cold Ash just around the corner. Nice part of the world. Getting the train down to there is a mission from Scotland though. Even if you did fly you would then need to get trains or a hire car.

My father in law has worked for SSE for over 40 years and i can honestly say that of the people i have met, they seem to really nurture their staff and look after them - personally i think its worth the gamble but its your shout

£100 is well worth it. Borrow from a family member if it's that difficult. Must have someone to support your future.

Neighbours son worked in ASDA for years, recently got a job as a trainee/apprentice with SSE working on the powerlines etc - seems to love it. Big changes as he was used to the local travel and hours at ASDA but now he's moved away and seems to be enjoying it.

Yea I would say roll the dice, from what I hear, I sit next to the guys that support instant energy (Smart meter installs etc) and SSE seem to be one of the few companies that actually train their staff properly,

Annoys me when companies aren't willing to reimburse reasonable travel costs. Fortunately every job I've ever applied for I have been reimbursed for travel. Leaves a sour taste in my mouth when they don't offer to.
