I went down to the South of France via the Alps on an R6 back in 2003 (during that heatwave) Rained non-stop for the 1st day, my leathers got soaked right through, then I nearly died in the heat on the way back, oh and I got a speeding ticket. Missus flew down and I met up with her in Cote D'Azur.
Do the Alps !!!! Try and avoid summer though, as you'll be having to take it easy on the twisty's cos if you go around a bend too fast, you risk smacking into the back of a coach load of Dutchies.
A must visit is the Gourges De Verdon. Which is the 2nd biggest canyon in the world. Only 2nd to the Grand Canyon in the US.
Oh I wanna mention that when you are touring, the pain just goes away. Normally 2hrs and I'd be done on a bike.. But when you are touring 12hrs is very doable. Actually After 12hrs I didn't even wanna stop ! In CA (which in my opinion is the best biking in the world) I did two days of 12hrs using a rental CBR600RR. It was almost better than ###
