I'm looking for input from the collective on towbar mounted cycle carriers.
I have a Peugeot 5008 MPV with roofbars and cycle carriers, but with five bikes and a roofbox to accommodate, I find myself looking at towbar mounted cycle carriers.
The roofbox pretty much lives on top of the car nowadays, as we're short on space at home. This leaves enough room for one bike on the roof. Couple with the difficulties of loading bikes onto a high vehicle and the recent installation of a towbar, I think a detachable cycle carrier that can accommodate 3/4 bikes is on the cards.
Tilt-able is attractive, but without a 'test drive' I don't actually know if one would work with the way the boot opens (hinged at top), unless it tilts really well.
Anyway, I've always used Thule so visited their site and OMG, the prices!
There are two available, with, a far as I can tell, minimal differences in functionality, but big differences in prices.
Thule EuroClassic G6 929 RRP £510 and the Thule VeloCompact 927 RRP £435.
The latter looks to be easier to store, which will be a big advantage. But the former looks sturdier; when you factor in the value of the bikes being carried (>£2500) that's a major plus.
I just wondered if anyone had either of these carriers, or could offer alternatives. I came across a Witter carrier, which looked really good; it could be mounted vertically; looked compact (easier to store); held four bikes without an optional extra (Thule would need £100 spending to make it carry four bikes); but the owner reviews were disappointing.
