Just turned the heating on because its FREEZNG and not really had to use it before.

managed to work out all the radiators, as they have little dials on them with easy symbols.

The towel one in the shower room isn't working, its just cold. it doesnt have any kind of dial on it, but has two turnable bits on the bottom that say "open" with an arrow. tried moving them and it didnt really do anything, but I was worried about breaking it.

The one in the bathroom doesnt have these on, and that one is working.

How do i make it work?

If its totally cold then more than likely its either not turned on or there is a fault somewhere, probably with the valve. A radiator that needs bled will be cold at the top, but there will be at least some level of heat in the middle and at the bottom, caused by the trapped air not letting the water fully circulate.

Try the valves again, I wouldn't worry about breaking them as they will be pretty strong.*

*If they do break, I take full theoretical responsibility. I'll say sorry, but no reimbursement will be offered :)

I was more worried what "open" meant, I had visions if water flooding my bedroom!

I can't believe you had to ask here about this, when all you needed to do was turn the valve to open. Its like trying to open a closed door and then realising there is a handle.

Knowledge is a great thing, particularly if you have it or can be given it by someone who is willing to help you.

Being an arse is not :)

Leeches are the most effective way of bleeding a radiator, use as many as you can find.

Or, build a pile of wood around it and set it alight - a toasty bathroom in no time.

Turning the valves worked!

Didn't need bleeding, water came out as soon as I turned the thing.

thanks for your helpful input. As i stated above, I didnt know what the valves were for.

and as for asking questions that really shouldnt need to be asked on here... glass houses and stones and all that?

No problem with asking questions like this here. Seemed like a confusing one! Glad it's sorted.

I can see how house buying queries and how to turn a radiator on are comparable :D
