Hi guys :)

I was using a Thermaltake Tower 112 on my Athlon 2500+ @ 2250. It allowed me to have a real quiet running fan.

I have now swapped to a C2D E4300 @ 2.6Ghz and using the stock heatsink. I can't go any further really on my asrock board as it kinda sucks for overclocking. Would you guys still use the Tower 112 anyway, or just sell it and get an Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro when I get a different motherboard? Bear in mind that it's a complete pain in the royal butt to attach as the 112 uses a support bracket behind the motherboard.

I'd use the Tower112. Arctics don't have a great build quality, I doubt you'd get better results than the Tower 112 by using an ACF7 :)

If it were me I'd use the tower still as it's better. If noise is important to you I would think it the best choice. Depending on how often you upgrade you're only going to have to fit it once every 6 months maximum.

The other thing that'd put me off selling it is that a fair percentage of the cost would be postage as heatsinks are heavy by their very nature.

Be careful when you fit it of course - the danger would more complicated fittings is that you knock something off your board.

It is fiddly as hell to put on (nerve wracking to be honest), and it is secured in place using nuts on bolts that go through the motherboard. It is also very heavy being pure copper. I have transported my computer (complete with this cooler on it !!) and never cracked the athlon xp :) ).

Is it worth keeping hold of though? Although it louder my Vantec TMD heatsink (which was small) cooled slightly better (on the xp), than the tower. Maybe it was because I haven't lapped the thing yet though, or because I was using a single 90mm 1200rpm fan?

p.s. That XP did me proud and will be sad to see it sold.

The arctic will be noisier and hotter. If you're happy with that as a trade for ease of assembly and less stress on the mainboard then go for it. As the chip has an intel IHS I don't think the stress on the chip is as much of an issue. I had a friend over at (not allowed to mention competitor so won't) in Manchester who was throwing the things at the ground to see how much abuse they could take (didn't actually manage to kill one).

Having said this I advise everyone to take the upmost care with any and all electrical components and do not condone any abuse to anyone or anything.

EDIT:// on a seperate but related note why have you not clocked the 4300 higher?

The Arctic is a newer design and performs very well in the majority of cases so I don't see why it would be outperformed by the Thermaltake.

He already stated he has an Asrock board and can't overclock much.

Because the Thermaltake is 3 pounds of copper and they both use the same size fan. I can't find any reviews but if the OP is willing to lap the termaltake and use his already very quiet fan, then on paper at least it should cool better.

Think I'm gonna sell it as I spent more than I meant to on an upgrade (bought a gfx card as well as C2D and Motherboard).

Think thats the best option as now i'm married I don't get that much time to fiddle like I used to  (or need to anymore lol)
