Towers on carpet or.....?

I have just searched the net to see if towers, mine is a 900D, should be okay to stay on the carpet or should be sitting on 1/2 inch/inch plank of wood. Or has that question/issue moved on and there are now companies making tower 'platters' just for that purpose?

I believe it depends on the orientation of the PSU intake fan.

Fan facing down and sucking air from under the case via a grill or vented holes then use a platter etc.

Fan inwards taking air already inside the case have it on the carpet.

For a while what I've been doing with my tower is get a slab of ply or whatever wood slightly bigger than the footprint of the tower and get a set of plastic rounded furniture feet/sliders, which either screw in or are self-adhesive...

Stick those on the underside and not only will it keep the PC raised up a little further from the carpet, it'll also absorb some vibrations, and if you make sure to leave a moderate amount of slack on your cables you can easily slide the PC forwards to more easily access the rear I/O ports or take the side off to do work on it etc.

Strangely enough I had the very same set up of having a 1/2 plinth wrapped with a thin layer of black rubber mesh and 4 furniture 'cups' underneath. Seemed to work well with the only impact with being on the 1st floor and sound of the system coming through to the room below (fortunately the kitchen). Hence my initial question as I had cobbled together a rather unscientific approach to dust and vibration eradication of Lian Li P80 case (similar in size to the Corsair 900D). So I thought I may have missed a beat on any developments from within the industry. If we were to spend £2000 on a Thorens vinyl turntable, you would bet your bottom dollar (sorry for the mixed metaphors) we have it level and in a dust free environment.

Maybe that's part of what's missing from the computer industry that a high end system is delivered on a palette and you are left to your devices where as a high end audio system would have those who sold it begging you to deliver it and set it up to its maximum potential.

Just a thought!
