Are these tyres any good?

I know nothing about tyres, they are not for me or my car. Someone said they could get 4 decent tyres for £130, I said you couldn't and they said yes you can 4x Toyo Proxes T1-R's off of eBay.....

They would be on a small hatchback so 14" I would imagine.

I have them on my Astra and there ok. They give very good traction in the dry and as long as you dont drive like a lunatic they are perfectly capable in the wet (though will let go when pushed).

The key issue is the soft sidewalls, you can feel the flex (which in itself is impressive given the lack of feeling in the Astra's steering) which can feel a bit odd for the first few hundred miles. But after that they seem to grip well, are relatively quiet, and the wear rate doesnt seem as bad as some people make out.

I'm not sure where you are getting 4 for £130 though, mine at 205/50/16 were £80ish a corner, when I was looking at them for the yaris at 195/50/15 they were still 50+ a corner.

Got them on my Clio.

There are better tyres, but they are more expensive. If your budget is T1R money, there is no better. But as always, if you can afford more, there are better tyres.

195/50/15 are £35 a corner @ camskill add a tenner a corner for post and fitting though.

I had a set on my Impreza originally, the fronts lasted 2000 miles (!) before the sidewalls were destroyed. They did grip well though for the time they lasted. To be fair I imagine any tyres with soft sidewalls would be worn pretty quickly on a car like an Impreza so they should be fine for a 'normal' car.

I've got 4 new ones on my MX5 but I can't drive it yet.

From what I've ready they're a decent cheap summer tyre however they wear very quickly and have soft sidewalls. I've got a slight stretch which should alleviate the soft sidewall situation but I got them purely to see why they are so popular and they were cost effective to get me back on the road for the summer.

Didn't like them on my DC2, any fast steering inputs and you could feel them flopping about

They weren't death traps, seemed pretty good in the wet, but wouldn't buy them again for my car. (they were on the car when I bought them)

What size specifically?

195/50/15 for some reason is a really really cheap tyre size, 175/65/14 are quite a bit pricier

Great on my 306 diesel, had loads of grip and were cheap too. However on the Fabia they understeer a lot and don't inspire confidence. I have Rainsports on the Fabia now and they seem a lot better than the Toyos. So yeah, they seem to be very car specific.

But the simple fact is the Rainsports cost more than the Toyos, so should always be better.

At the price point they are at the Toyos are great. But as always there is better to be had if you spend more money. Its an argument I have on Cliosport all the time. Someone suggests putting T1Rs on and then some fool will go "no, don't, their crap, put Michelin PE2's on, their much better", which is true, but the PE2's cost 40% more!

I put some rainsport 2's on the xsara recently, when it came down to it the rainsports were £2 a corner more than the tr1's (195/50/r15). no-brainer really. cant imagine they'd be much different at 14"

Binnsy, 195/50/15s are £33 each at Camskill. I imagine 14's would be £25ish?

My understanding was that 195/50/15 was about the cheapest tyre size going. I may be wrong but I think you will find 14s are even more.

I've just had a look on camskill and T1Rs at 195/50/15 are £35.95 each, that comes to £143.80 for 4 with another £9.96 for shipping, bringing the grand total to £176.79

Thats £46.79 more than the quoted £130 for 4 before fitting. By the time you have added fitting onto that your talking £200.
