hello..

Basically, i'm toying with the idea of getting a celica gt (6th Gen) and have stumbled upon the ST varietys. Now, just wondering what the differences are between the 2, apart from the 2.0l vs 1.8l..

There are figures out there on the interweb, but none of them match up so its all a bit vague. Anyone ever owned the 2 or no anyone that has that can tell me just how much slower the ST is?

Thanks a lot

I think the ST is 114Bhp ish, the 2.0GT is 168Bhp. Also have the GT4 which is the 2.0 turbo making around 230-240 I think, depending on if it's uk or import or something.

Not sure on alloy size, trim, skirts etc.

well, truth be told.. its gonna be my first car so I dont think the GT4 is an option, bit too pokey for now

So, the ST is a bit cheaper to insure.. not by much though, and a bit more fuel friendly. Decisions, decisions

The ST aint garbage though right??

If you get the ST i bet within 4 weeks you'll be bored of it. Don't forget that its only a 1.8 engine. Like you said the GT ain't that much more on the insurance so i'd get that instead. I have previously owned both the ST & GT and currently own a GT4 ST205.

I owned the ST for about 2.5 weeks and then sold it as it felt that even a 1.4 could go faster than it.

The GT I owned for about 6 months. It was ok, could beat a few other 2.0 16v cars but I soon got bored of it.

Then I brought my ST205. Had it a few months now and it still puts a smile on my face when I drive it.

....So i'd recommend getting the GT instead of the ST. If the only reason you would be getting a ST is the insurance then maybe you shouldn't be buying a Celica. Hope this helps :)

well the only reason i was thinkin about an ST is that i've seen a nice looking one, very clean, for a bit of a steal. That said though, there are plenty of gt's floating around too so its likely that i'll probably take the gt route

Then, in a year, it'll be gt4/supra time when I've got a bit of experience behind me:D

Out of interest, how would the ST and GT compare to a focus 1.8 TDi?

I learnt in one of them you see and at the risk of a flaming, I thought that was pretty nippy at times

Thanks for your help

I've drove a ST and own a GT.

ST is pretty slow, and a let down for a 1.8 in my opinion. The GT is quicker than people say in here, i think they are comparing it to something thats out of its class. Its an old style coupe that will keep up with any older hot hatches. GT4 is very pricey on insurance, petrol and if something goes wrong. Still if i had the opertunity(money) i'd get one to replace my GT.

I have a ST, which is my first and I bought it new and I still really enjoy it.

No its not the fastest but I still really enjoy driving it, great on the country roads up here

right oh.... i owned a GT 9 years ago absolutely loved it......and now i've made my return with the GT4.......awesome! :D

my mate use to own a ST always felt gutted when i let him drive my GT. If you cant afford the faff then so be it....but dont waste your money on buying a ST, money down the drain.

GT's were 173bhp.

are you on any of the forum's,.....GT4OC or GT4EC

Cheers folks, lots of handy insights

Its looking like i'll be taking the GT route though.. just had a quote and the difference is only £140 between the 2 so not really worth pondering too much about.

Just gotta find one now.. is there anywhere I should be looking, apart from the obvious auto trader etc?

Thanks a lot

Get yourself on the owners club mate, www.celica-club.co.uk - it's definitely a buyers market so you can grab yourself a bargain, how much are you looking to spend?

I own a GT and my bro has an ST, its well worth the extra bit of cash per year for the GT but neither are as slow as people are saying. If its your first car then dont even entertain the thought of a GT4, awesome cars but they are far far too quick for an inexperienced driver. Make you sure you get one thats been looked after properly and it won't miss a beat :)
