Looking at perhaps getting a used one (140 bhp,2000-2002 reg) in the next couple of months. What are your guys thoughts on them? I love the look of them and I have heard generally good things.

Hows performance, comfort ,handling e.t.c.? Would be useful to have feedback if any of you guys own/owned one.

Now ive got a half decent job I am looking for a step up from my ghastly coloured 1.4 peugoet 306 genoa :o. I'm not too keen on hot hatch looks and prefer coupe styling.

Well for a start I've got the 190 variant of the car, if you can afford the 190 GET IT.

The 2000-2002 cars are pre-face lift and unfortunately suffer from oil consumption issues. Some 52 plates and above are facelift and do not have this curse.

However, if the oil is regularly topped up and isn't left to dry out then there is no problem if you don't mind keep some oil aside :).

The 190 variant of the car does not suffer at all from this issue.

Performance is good even in the 140, its fairly quick for what it is. It will feel lightning quick compared to the 1.4. It is comfortable and handling is brilliant, I think I've read somewhere it is one of the best FrWD Coupés around!

Here are some pictures of mine so you know I'm not full of poop!

Not quite as simple as that. If your car is using oil, it's possible the pre-cats have degraded and fallen out. If this happens, it can block your cat, which in turn ends up as terminal engine failure. Topping up the oil is normally only viable for a small amount of time before it all goes kaputt. The 140bhp engines are the same as the ones in the MR2 Roadster (1zz engine) so there's plenty of information knocking about for it!

I'd get the 190bhp 2zz any day over a 140!

Enjoy your Seat :).

Well that was mature........

I love the stylings of the Celica to be honest. My brother had a Celica GT, and it was lovely both inside and out, and looked VERY aggressive from the front. Only problem with them is that even the 190s don't feel proper fast; keeping them in Lift mode requires ragging the balls off it, and even then it'll drop out of Lift on a gear shift if you don't get it just right........

I think they're great cars, and I really like the look of one

My previous housemate went from a 1.4 306 to a Celica 190 a few years ago and he said it's one of the best decisions he ever made!

Drive it and see what you think - there's a really noticeable 'kick' in the 190 when the valves lift giving a surge of power. Some people love this, some hate it so it's a matter of personal preference really

Whilst I didn't see the reason behind his insult to my car, there was no need for it, how was it immature? There is nothing wrong with a SEAT, my mum has one, I wasn't being insulting?

The only time you'd have difficulty keeping it in lift is when you are changing from 1st to 2nd but if you can actually drive then it won't take long to get it and keep it in there!

Do you mean the prefacelift 190 is oil trouble free?

I have asked this on Celica Club Uk and no one replied :(

Great car :) Been longing for one for years...soon...

I believe that's correct, yes - the 2zz doesn't suffer from the oval bore/pre-cat issue :)

Bye putting some horrible bodykit on one !!

Sry Rackerz

All his kit is standard spec in Japan so how about do your research before slating it eh :)

Most of the important points to know have been mentioned, oval piston issue is isolated to the prefacelift 1zz's, none of the guys on the celica club have reported the problem on the 2zz.

Fantastic looking cars but then I would say that, mine grabs a lot of attention so don't get a red one especially if you won't like that ;) If you can, go for a facelift, not just for the oil issues but much nicer interior plastics too.

The 140 does NOT feel slow (my bro has one, i've got the 190 and they are much the same until you hit 6.2k revs) unless you are used to much quicker cars generally. They handle fantastically and the driving position is great, love mine :)
