I have this access point http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-030-TP and I tried using it with the PoE today, but it didn't seem like it was getting enough power, as it kept on restarting all the time.

Is it because Im using 15 or 20 meters of CAT5e cheapo cable and if I get better quality stuff it will work? The outer casing in one part of the cable has been ripped a bit due to our cat, but the actual wires seem ok and AP is functioning fine browsing the net ect

Is this using the included PoE injector and 9VDC PSU?

It's passive PoE so it'll be using pairs it isn't using for data to carry the power. Your damaged cable could be fine for 100Mbps data, but dodgy for the power.

If it is only 9VDC then that's very low for PoE. I'm sure it's capable of working, but it's possible that it'll make it more sensitive to cable length/quality.

The obvious thing to try is a short cable, and work up from there.

Have you got a DVM you could measure the voltage at the working end with?

I use the PoE injector that came with the access point and the mains power adaptor for the access point on the PoE injector.

Yeah I think the next step is to try a shorter cable if I really want to use PoE.

I was going to say, isn't PoE 48vdc usually?

It more sounds like it's using some kind of proprietary power injection, that just happens to be using ethernet as it's medium, rather than adhering to 802.3 standards (af or at).

Passive PoE is a terrible thing and any manufacturers who adopt it over something that's actually a standard should be ashamed. It's not like real PoE is prohibitively expensive.

I would say it's more likely that you have a power supply that's right on the limit for acceptable voltage output than 20m of cable causing it problems.
