This modem router from TP-Link is great for people who don't like a lot of clutter and devices plugged in. In VDSL mode this will replace your OpenReach modem and your router.

With its improved Wifi and Gigabit LAN it will be a great improvement over a Standard ISP Router.

Simultaneous Dual Band
Two separate wireless networks that will run on either the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band, simultaneously. The traditional 2.4GHz band can provides more range and is great for everyday web surfing use but it is more susceptible to interference from wireless devices running on the same frequency. While the 5GHz band can provide faster wireless speeds and avoid much interference .This way, the 5GHz band is just right for bandwidth heavy tasks like on-line gaming and HD streaming. Now you can enjoy both advantages of the two bands by just having one device.

Full Gigabit Ports - More Power to You
With 300Mbps 802.11n wireless and 4 gigabit LAN ports, the TD-W9980 is the ideal choice for bandwidth heavy users that rely on speedy, reliable connections for bandwidth intensive work or entertainment such as lag-free conference calls, HD video streaming or online gaming.

2 USB Sharing Ports - Easy Sharing

Very nice but how would it rate against the asus modem/routers?? I know asus are way more expensive as I have one. I know little about tp link routers.

Any plans for an AC version in the future? I'm currently using a Billion 8200N but with one device already using AC and plans to upgrade the rest of my wireless devices to AC I'll need an AC combo. And Billions AC combo is currently going for around £140. So a cheaper alterative would be nice.

i assume this is a fibre modem/router so i can replace 2 boxes with this one for my fibre connection? i have a tp link fibre router now on top of the bt box.

Thats what im hoping as I have just bought one to replace the stock BT modem and asus router with just one box. Just a bit worried about the range of the 2.4 g band as it uses 2 internal ariels for that band, the external ones are for 5g which none of my devices can access.

|Will update when I get it monday and how easy it it is to setup and how well it works. If im not on monday it means its a pita :D

So with this can I plug my Virgin Media fibre optic (coming thru the VM Hub of course) into the Ethernet WAN, and use the ADSL port for my BT broadband (without using the BT homehub I guess)? And if so, can it be configured to auto-switch from my fibre to my ADSL when VM inevitably cuts out several time a week, so I can have uninterrupted (almost) internet connection? That would be ideal as I recently got the BT connection because of how shoddy Virgin's stability is in my area, but I also really like the speeds of virgin when it does work, but I don't want to have to arrange some convoluted way of switching between the two that my wife will not be able to work out when I'm away with work.

Edit: Another thought as I noticed its not AC wifi. If all the above works, I guess the wifi can be turned off and the router wired to my TP-Link wireless-ac router to get wireless-ac in my home... crazy set up I know, but until I can find something affordable that does all of the above, it would be nice to know if this would work and just slot into my current home network(s)!

It specifically mentions VDSL so I would think that is the case, yes.

Well I Got the tp-link yesterday and setting it up would have been a doddle if I could:

a/ read correctly
b/ type correctly

I use Zen vdsl and it has settings for all major ISP's (after upgrading the firmware which was also a doddle). Check the firmware versions ASAP and update if necessary

Once I realized I had misspelled my username and also not put all of it in it connected instantly.

My old setup was the standard BT modem and a Asus DSL N55u with beta firmware allowing it to be used as a wan router.

Running www.speedtest.net I had :

Asus
down 55.17
up 11.22

TP-link
down 55.55
up 10.73

Overall no real change except im down to one box and one power socket :)

I havent checked out the wireless range of the 2.4g band (only one my kit uses) as have read the range is poor as the antenna are internal for the 2.4g band. My gaming pc is hardwired.

If anyone has any questions I will try to help if I can. Hope this helps anyone sitting on the wall about buying one. Just buy it if it suits your needs :D

So has anyone tried this or one of the Archer D-series with both an ADSL and cable internet (via ethernet input) plugged into this router simultaneously to see if it has auto failover?

If not I might have to look into the Asus RT-AC68U as I've read that can take two ISP inputs for easy switching in a failure, but again not sure if it auto switches (failover)? Only thing is, I'm quite fond of TP-Link.

Thought setting it up for BT Infinity was a doddle but then i can read and type correctly (for the most part). :D

Home Hub 5 has always been a bit crap but since the firmware they stuck on it around Dec/Jan, i just had enough and got the 9980.
BT forums has its own sticky for the firmware since last night as well.

Build myself a PC for gaming and my connection turns into a nightmare.

Very happy with my B grade 9980 from OC.

Looking at the settings on the router it can only run in either vdsl or adsl mode. I dont see anything for ethernet and dsl but will look for you later.
