Hello,

I was waiting for the 2950x when I saw an offer in OC (B grade) for a x399 + 1950x that it is worthy to consider (I will call tomorrow to confirm the conditions of both of them).

I am looking for a silence computer with 32GB Ram minimal over Linux OS. I have set the following configuration:
  • AMD TR 1950x
  • Asus Rog Strix x399
  • Team Group Xtreem 32GB DDR4 PC4-25600C14 3200mhz
  • Samsung 970pro 1TB (I already have it)
  • Corsair HX750i Platinum
  • Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3
  • Lian Li PC-011 Dynamic

And these are my questions:
  1. Is the memory ok for this motherboard (not listed in QLV in memory or motherboard)? Being b-die should be ok, but you never know. Any other option? I was looking for the 4x8GB Gskill 3200 C16 but it is not currently available (and C14 is 110 pounds more expensive than Team)
  2. Is the size of the memory compatible with the Noctua? I was thinking to take the Enermax 3x120 instead but I read in the reviews that it is noisy. Opinion?
  3. Power supply... I was looking for something cheaper with 650W and not noisy, but I couldn't find anything (something like the RM650; but it is not available right now)
  4. I couldn't find any passive graphic card that supports 4K screen (Nvidia if possible) :(
Thank you!

Want silence, bequiet, fan/PSU/cooler - but you do have to pay for it
Silent loop 360 and mounting bracket - built and few and spec'd a few with the above for x299/399 .

If you are planning on upgrading to 2nd gen / 3rd gen TR , I wouldn't use a current board that's for sure , reason why Aorus releasing an Extreme board over their current flagship Aorus 7, and MSI also redoing one .
If using avx2 instructions, VRM will hot much you could cook eggs on them . Late week Q4 launch so can't say much more

90 day warranty on b-grade items, not worth it at all.

this...^^^^^^
specially if your doing workload bound work. Know Gigabyte rep mentioned its a grey area , and im guessing asus would be the same- used have to ask OCUK CS about why its b-grade then find out asus stance on it- specially if someone has logged the bar code to their asus account .

that memory will be good , plus you've got @8 Pack on hand if you run into any issues . Pay the premium and you get the best :)

seems TR2 will launch a lot sooner then i thought . keep getting US and UK dd/mm/yy - mm/dd/yy mixed up . could explain why Aorus and MSI had boards on show for Computex looks polished

Will you overclock because that cooler will not do for OC. Enermax Threadripper cooler AIO is the way to go for OC system.

Memory 8Pack Dark pro 3200mhz C14 is the best choice here. Just buy two 16gb kits.

I would buy Superflower PSU or Seasonic not Corsair. They have hybrid or silent modes if you pick the correct one.

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/supe...us-platinum-power-supply-black-ca-040-sf.html in ECO mode for example.

Hey 8_pack, quick question about RAM as some of the pricings and stuff confuses me. Is any 8pack ram sufficient for a TR or Ryzen machine? Are they all b-die?

Example the 3200 RAM is C14 but is more expensive than 4000 C18.
What impact does these timings have and how come the faster ram is cheaper. I understand that you wouldn't get an AMD machine running at that speed but just curious and trying to make full sense.

THreadripper IMC is not able to run over 3200mhz in almost all cases so 3200mhz is fine for you. You can buy the 4000mhz and set up as C14 without issues. All are high bin B die.

Faster is cheaper as we have some older stock that we bought before the crazy RAM prices which escalated further in more recent batches.

Yeah I believe that's the same for TR or any Ryzen chip right now?
So buying 4000mhz and setting up as 3200 C14 will work just as well as the 3200mhz C14 sticks themselves? Any higher chance of less compatibility or running into issues?

few of us run 4000hz at lower speed . if your really lazy you just keep the timings and change the speed down to 3200hz .

also hand as if you change for future ZEN2 chip, they should be able to take advantage of faster ram and dont need to fork out on more ram :)

seems 16gb 4000hz kit gone back up in price , was £170 odd

Thank you for the answer. At the end I was not able to call as I was working and when I was free it was already late. Anyways, next two weeks I am going on holidays so I will wait and depending on the cost of the 2950x I will take 1950x B grade or the 2950x.

Points:
  • No, I am not going to overclock the computer or play video games. I am going to use it for virtual machines, and multi threat applications over Linux. This is the reason I need memory and cores.
  • Thank you for the power supply, it is 30 pounds cheaper and it is exactly what I want it :)
  • What is the difference between Dark pro and Extreem? The Dark pro are around 50 pounds more expensive despite being 3200 C14 B-die both of them. Worthy?
  • Graphic cards 710 do not support 4K as per vendors description. There are not 1030 or 730 passive in stock. I have a Nv2950 but it is fighting with my 32".
Related to the cooler, the funny thing is that I have a Watercooling at home that I am not using (4-5 years old), and maybe it could be a better solution. It is a very old configuration so I was scare to use it:

Maybe it could be a better idea to buy a waterblock for TR4, tube for 1/2" and "fungus water protection" and for 100 pounds I will have something better. I was checking to buy a cylindrical reservoir that it can be mounted with a D5 as I do not like the DD, but they cost more than 70 pounds :( Also, I was checking hard tube but buying all the required tools (30 pounds), 8 fittings (50 pounds) and tube (20 pounds) it is too much right now.

Kind regards!

Oh I didn't see that res before, good price. Thank you!

Related to the memories, what is the difference between Dark pro and Extreem? Both of them are 8GB dimms 3200 C14 B-die.

Thanks!
