Tracing a web-site?

is there any good software about that'll allow me to trace a web-site - who the owners might be, host, location etc.?

You don't need software for it, use a whois as the registrar and then ping the domain name and slap the IP in Ripe.net

Thanks, that makes sense to me as far as the Ripe.net bit - what does that do for me?

I use allwhois.com, type in the domain name and it will give you most of the info you are after.
Finding out who actually hosts it would involve a bit more digging, as Cuchulain said ripe.net is your best bet as this will give you detailed info regarding the IP address.

IP wise, if I'm looking for physical location I use http://www.maxmind.com/ .

http://centralops.net/ also offers domain information etc, useful if you want to see who's registered the website.
