Tracing Withheld Numbers

getting pranked?
Been there, done that, haven't got the t-shirt yet.:p

Was getting calls from a private number, supposedly an agency purporting to be contracted to T-Mobile. Apparently I was allowed to upgrade to a new mobile phone. Wasn't really interested but this guy with an Indian accent went on and on and pestered me. Turns out it was Sandip, a mate of mine, a bit bored and decided to prank me.

I think he's stopped now but I still get some calls from private numbers that hang up as soon as I answer. Haven't seen 'dip (our nickname for him) for a while so I don't know if it is him or no.

sister is, fairly threatening too (your dead *****etc), may be related to a broken window in our house last week authorities are involved but are doing didly squat as per, despite ariving promptly and promising to follow up over a week ago. Know that it is one of several people but dont want to go beating anyone up as one of them is supposed to be getting charged with assault, in a related incident, unlikely though. Suspects are all under 16 too which is irritating.

I had a few the other day, answeredmy phone and there was silence so hung up. It rang again, answered it and I could hear some kinda rockmusic playing in the background, sounded very much like sisters of mercy, worked out who it was, my violent ex, said **** off Carrie, hung up and haven't been bothered since.

Yep you've got to go to the fuzz. As a network we are legally not allowed to trace the number or give out any information about the callers, even to the user; the only people that can are the police.

edit: that's not to say we can't, we can. we're just not allowed to.

Is it possible to have a withheld number to a mobile traced, ie by phoning up O2 or something?

If someone's e.g. ringing you all the time with prank/unwanted etc. calls then you can report it to BT and they can block the person who's phoning you from your phone line.

All calls can be traced, as only the presentation number is hidden. The CLI number is not hidden, but is not easily accessable to the reciever of the call.

Just reject the call? Or ignore it? If they can't get through to speak to her, they'll soon get bored.

Better yet forward all witheld calls to the police station :p

Being able to withhold your number is stupid as the only possible use for it is pranks and threats, who knows what complete idiot came up with the idea.

Quite probably the same idiot who decided that people in the world can and should have some right to privacy.
The same person who fights for those little rights that mean you don't have to write your own address on the back of any letter you send and that kind of thing.

Like many things in life it was developed with "the good & helpful" in mind and has been abused by some.

But there is no reason anyone would want to withold their number other than to prank or harass someone, I doubt it has ever been used legitimatley.

I have my caller ID info blocked. And I have never made a prank or harassing phone call. I just prefer not to have everyone I call instantly know before they pickup who I am.

It's just like I dont advertise on here my exact home address. Nor my phone number. If I wanted everyone and thier little brother to know what my phone number was, I'd have it tatooed to my forehead.

It's a matter of privacy for me.

possibly the same reason some people prefer not to give out their mobile number willy nilly, privacy and not to be bothered by people that will just wase your time.
i block my number when i phone work so that i cant be contacted all the time and called in when i dont want to be :D

Hmmm why not just ignore the call??. If i get any withheld or private numbers i do not pick up the phone simple as that, if its important then they can bloody well leave me a voicemail.
