Myself my brother and our mate have successfully organised a couple of owners club (Mx5nutz) exclusive track days at our local track (Teesside Autodrome) We've had great feedback and found a formula that works well with that particular track. We can happily run a full day OPL with 25-30 cars for only £70 a car.

Now following on from this we're looking into contacting bigger and better tracks and seeing what we can organise there. Unfortunately none of us have any experience of other UK tracks other than driving Croft. Obviously costs are going to be a lot higher to hire a bigger track, but then they can cater for more cars.

What I'm after is any information regarding what works well on what tracks that our regular track day drivers go to. Things like does OPL or sessions work best on a particular track. How many cars can you have comfortably on track at once. Is the track better suited to high power cars, or lower powered better handling cars. Have you been on a day that was over subscribed, if so how many cars would be that max you'd recommend for that track. Any other info that you think would help would be great.

We're busy getting prices but without knowing what works well on what track it's going to be hard to know if it's viable to set something up. The last thing we want to do is work out that for a particular track we'd need 60 cars to make it cost effective, and then get there and find its too busy and it's a crap day.

Any info will be greatly appreciated, particularly on Cadwell and Oulton Park.

Thanks

Hi there

With Outlon they let 25-30 cars on track at any one time and it suits low-medium power cars best, but the big power stuff there is fine too they just won't be able to get upto crazy speeds like 130+

I'd imagine it cost anywhere between £3500-£5000 to hire out Oulton on a week day at a guess.

For me I'd only ever do an OPL day, sessions suck big time.

Thanks. How many do you think is a reasonable total amount of cars for the day? 40-50?

I'm pretty sure it's round the £7000 mark to book it out for the day...

Cadwell definitely more fun in an MX5 I'd say.

We do all quite fancy Cadwell. Any info regarding max cars on track and max recommend in total for the day?

Thanks a lot.

Surely your best bet is to look at a successful TDO. Rather than trying to work out the optimum yourself, look at what someone like Javelin or Apex charge for a track, and how may people they run per day. They clearly have to make a profit from that otherwise they would go bust.

We're doing that as well, but we want to hear from a drivers point of view on what they find works and what doesn't. We aren't doing this for a profit, we've made none on our previous days. Due to this we've been able to offer cheap days with more track time than would have normally been on offer. With it being a club only day the atmosphere and track etiquette has also been better than normal. We're just trying to work out if this is something we can do on other tracks or if just going through a good TDO offers the best solution.

I've never had to queue much at a track day so the numbers most TDOs run should see you good.

If your running a members only day then you should be fine with open pit lane. Sessions work well at controlling an unruly bunch and letting hot heads calm down between sessions, which shouldn't be a problem for a club organised day.

Your right actually the price I mentioned is discounted repeat customer price, it's normally a lot more.

Upto 50 cars us fine, little to zero queuing, it's when you go beyond 60 cars queuing can become an issue.

At least 10 cars will blow up and 10 people go home by lunch time from my experience!

3pm onwards you can lap all afternoon no worries!

Cadwells a good track, high power cars should be able to reach decent speed still, but it rewards corner speed and how much you can carry onto the straights.
