Track Mania Nations + Starforce = Why?

This made me wonder, I have installed the excellent TM:Nations via the free download from their site. Works beautifully on my XP machine, but I've just installed it on my Vista machine to do a bit of lan fun, and it fell over, as the installed version of Starforce was incompatible with Vista. :confused:

Might be being slow here, but I thought Starforce was an antipiracy tool designed to confirm the authenticity of your CD/DVD. Why on earth does a free download need it? Just seems a little odd to me - and what the Herk is it checking for? There is no CD/DVD???

some very good points however I believe you can work round it by downloading the updated Starforce drivers.

OT: I think the download demo for DiRT also installed Starforce also!

I recall that it had something to do with cheat prevention, or at least they claimed it did.
