I'm supposed to be going down to a place in Durham today, however I do not own a Satnav!

I do however have a laptop and 3G dongle. Instead of printing off a billion maps, is there such an application I can install on the laptop and see myself on google maps or something?

There probably isn't.... but it's worth a go, if anyone knows of anything let me know :)

That will use a-GPS I'm guessing, which will be able to pinpoint your location to within about 1km probably so don't do you much good with road navigation. :)

Oh right, looks like I'm printing maps off then! heh

It doesn't seem to work either, it just keeps trying to find my location for about 5 minutes.

aGPS is a bit better than 1km. To be able to use aGPS you also need to have a phone with a built in GPS receiver. Most new smartphones have them.
