Track rod end question

Motors people I need your help.

I know very little about car maintenance so im looking for some advice.

My steering has been feeling rather heavy since the end of last week so went to kwik fit as my local garage was booked up, turns out my front right toe is out by quite some way.

Ok I say correct it, no worries. But the guy says my track rod end has seized and that I will need a new one, May as well replace the one on the other side as although that doesn't need the tracking changed it too has seized.

Here is my question, How do they plan to remove and replace them if they have seized? As he has ordered track rod ends only and not a track rod.

Now am I being an idiot? Or are they taking me for a ride.

If I am being an idiot please let me know :)

Many thanks

Track rods cost pennies IME, just did them on my wife's Pug for £22 (parts from GSF). You don't mess about with them, just change the whole unit.

I had this on my 205 years ago, they couldn't adjust the tracking correctly as the track rod end had seized. I ended up removing the entire steering rack and getting a blowtorch on it, which freed it up.

But the issue really is that once it's seized up in the first place, regardless of if it can be forced open again, it needs replacing. So no I don't think you are being taken for a ride.

If the tracking was out on one side did you not notice the car was pulling to one side? I don't think bad tracking will make the steering heavy either. Assuming it's got power steering it's more likely that it's something like the power steering pump surely?

It was pulling aswell, will see after this little outing if it fixes it or if it is a deeper problem.

Thanks for the help chaps :)

Ah cool, just trying to catch out what might be Kwik Fit garbage just in case :)
