Hello

Just wondering, where do people go to get the tracking done on their car? I've just had something replaced on my car to pass the MOT and now the tracking needs doing...But Just tyres wants £30 for it :o

Naturally it needs doing, but im so poor

Typically it's around an hours labour, so entirely garage dependant. If it's £30 for the whole job then that's very reasonable but usually the initial payment is just to get the car up on the ramps and attach the kit, then a surcharge per adjustment is added.

Don't get your "tracking" done when someone says it needs doing - this is typically a "quickly check that there's a degree of toe in" and doesn't make sure it's actually in line with the rest of the car.

What you really want to do is have a proper, full, 4 wheel alignment, preferably by somewhere that's got a Hunter machine or similar. This will ensure that all 4 wheels are pointing in the right directions and are aligned with the car's body.

Check www.alignmycar.co.uk for your nearest place that's got a Hunter machine.

This will be more expensive, but it's much better value than "having your tracking done mate".

Well, reason it needs doing is because the track rod end was replaced...So it was put back on as good as it can be by hand, but naturally it can be way out :(

Sucks really...Been reading that having a four wheel allignment would be best, but I've forked out, what...£500 this month on the car? I literally am so poor :p

EDIT: Found out that national tyres can do it for £15 ;)...Probably just front wheels though

£100 + vat for 4 wheel alignment with a Hunter machine. I'm going back to the garage on Saturday morning for their 3rd and final attempt at getting it right

In hindsight I should have just taken it to the dealer to be done, rather than a 'specialist'.

Well worth getting it done on a laser guided doo-dah machine. I get the check done for free and then £30 or so per adjustment that needs doing at my local place.

Oh and you'll be even poorer when you need to spend out on wheel alignment and new tyres because your current ones have no shoulders left in them so suck it up or park it up.

My lack of sympathy may or may not be due to being told that my alternator is knackered today less than 2 weeks after paying out for the MOT and Cambelt ;)

You'll save money in the long run by getting it aligned properly, from day 1. Running with "it'll do" settings will just knacker your tyres, so you'll need the cost of new tyres, AND then getting the alignment done.

Indeed. Just trying to find a good cheap place to do it, because im overdrawn already and have £6 in my account.

The above work had to be put on the credit card as it is.

Although i'm finding conflicting views on whether or not to bother getting the front two alligned over all four

Not to mention fuel consumption as well as increased load on some suspension components.

Depends on the car. On my one for instance there is no adjustment at the back as such. If it is noticeably out it needs shims to correct it. I'd still rather have it done on a hunter machine though.

If you can find a garage like my local (pay per adjustment) that has a Hunter then bobs your uncle.

Where I took mine it was £30 for the assessment and another £15 for each adjustment that needed to be made. That was at least 18 months ago though.

Don't think any adjustment can be made to the rear of the clio? Well as standard.

That's what I was wondering, I think it can be done, but for extra...no idea really.

Ended up going for £30 :o...If I had a printer could have got it for £15
