Is it possible to track someone down and find out their whereabouts via an e-mail received from them?

Got someone e-mailing me and need to find out where they are, but not sure if this is possible or how to go about it

I think the only thing you can do is get their address from the e-mail header and do a WHOIS on the IP. It will only give you a general area and might not even be correct.

Hmm when I click show header all that it shows is the e-mail address, surely there must be a full header?

The only thing I have managed to find out so far is the registered address of his domain which is a pub owned by his father, who denies all knowledge of him

I think there is mate but I really can't remember how to do it, I've only had to do it a couple of times using Gmail.

Aha, found the internet header now .. the IP brings up details of a ISP in Texas, USA , so I guess the **** is still (or again) hiding there

If only I could get his address

If its a serious issue you could always take it up with the complaints department of his ISP?

A guy that has done me and a few other people out of a lot of money and disappeared - he contacted me at a different company wanting to sell stock to me (also from a different company) so now I'm in touch with him , I want to find out his details :)

Go get him boy

It's maybe worth checking something like myspace were (I think) you can find someone through their email address. They may have an account there with some details that might be useful to you

I think you may only be able to find out which city/town they are from and not a specific address.
Surely you only get the town of their ISP? I say this because certain sites which have these "Find girls in your town" and have "Jenny, 23 from Ellsmere" or wherever which makes sense as my ISP is based in Liverpoo(l)

Is the email address gmail/hotmail etc or their own domain?

If it is at a domain they own, then you should be able to look up the whois information for the domain.

If you control your own webspace (with access to logs etc), one thing you could try is sending him reply e-mails with small embedded pictures, which of course, you serve off your website.

I imagine he may view his e-mails at home, and as such you may be able to get his IP, and from that infer his ISP. Then maybe send a polite letter to his ISP saying that you've been getting abusive e-mails, giving the IP and time/date.

or you could just sign him up for loads of spam.

plus you could just filter the e-mail into oblivion/spam filter it.

Just google the email addy. Really simple but if he's registered with any sites where he has some kind of a public profile it may turn something up.

Worth a shot anyway.

im assuming you've already signed up his address' to every vile and nasty mailing list available?

I've searched the e-mail address without luck, also checked myspace etc.

The Whois brings up the address of the guy's dad's pub , who we have spoken to a while ago.

The IP address is from an ISP in the USA - which confirms he is now in the USA as I know he disappeared to there but not sure if he returned to the UK or not.

Putting him on spam mailing lists won't really help the situation or tracking him down! I've got a few ideas to catch him out which I will try over the new few weeks - at least I'm lucky he only got me for around 500 quid - there is 4 of us working on this at the moment.
