Hello,
I have a small program on my Windows Mobile phone at the moment which is fantastic and due to me getting an iPhone in January, I am looking for a similar app for that.

The app basically as you move around, it takes a GPS reading, and uploads it to a specified web server which converts the location to a google earth format and saves it as a .knl file. Everytime a GPS reading is taken the new location appends itself to the end of the .kml file so you can use the live feature of Google Earth to track in real time the movement of the device. It can store locations in different trips and you can view these trips online via a google maps implementation and this can all be set up with your own custom web host.

Anyone know of anything for the iPhone which does the same?

GPS Tracker (instamapper.com) does the track, then you can store them in a named trip and then export to google earth...

However the app has to be running with the phone UNLOCKED.

Which, is a dam shame!

Which is because Apple don't like apps running in the background. The next best thing to tracking is MobileMe's lost phone feature. It won't do anything like you asked for but you can track your phone if it gets stolen.
