I have a few questions about the TRACKIR 5, any feedback would be appreciated.
Is the TRACKIR 5 any good?
Is it built to last andis it quite sturdy?
How good is it for IL2 COD?
I know it can be used in Arma, can it be used in any fps games?
Good place to purchase?
Is it worth the money?

1: Yes
2: Had mine since June 2009, sturdy enough.
3: Can't tell you but if it's anything like it's predecessor, a must imo.
4: No, only games that support independant head movement or trackir itself.
5: The official website was good enough.
6: Yup, a must for flight sims, arma, some racing games but it's a bit of a fad there.

Depends what games you want to use it for, but my most two played games use it.

1. Yep
2. My trackir 4 has been going strong for over 4 years
3. Its great for any flying game, now if they actually get IL2 cod running well ...
4. Games need to support trackir , for the list of supported games go to trackir website
5. RC simulations , based in uk and are lovely people
6. Yep , if you fly a lot u will wonder how you ever go on without it

I play Arma2 , il2 , DCS BS , DCS A-10C , FSX and I love my trackir , probably the best peripheral I have bought

1: Amazing, I couldn't be without it. Annoying thing is when playing games which don't support it I still move my head!
2: Yep in my opinion. It is connected to the stand by a magnet so to much force will just make it come away instead of breaking the frame.
3: Couldn't play IL1946/CloD without it.
4: No
5: Thumbs up for RC Simulations women was so helpful.
6: Yes I couldn't play FS without it.

Yes, it's awesome.

The unit is small and light, has a magnetic stand so if you knock it it'll just come off rather than break. I see no reason it wont last for years.

'****** awesome.

Only those that support it really.
Good place to purchase?
RC Simulations are good and very helpful if anything goes wrong, do not let the website put you off them.
Is it worth the money?
I'd say yes, easily, but this is always going to be a personal opinion. Fight sims are awful without it and they are what I like to play :)

Thanks very much for the info guys. I just got my joystick today so I will finally be giving COD a good go either tonight or tomorrow. If I can get into it, then I will give it serious thought. I don't want the expense for it to just sit there like I have done in the past.

I've had it for a few months and it's awesome in the IL2 games. I bought mine from Flightstore (hope I'm okay mentioning that)

I can't really see it breaking unless I drop from a great height.

Is it worth the money? Well if you play flight sims or race sims like myself then yes it is (I hear its good in Arma as well) I would say buy it if you have the cash.

I had trackIR when I did a lot of flying in FS9. I sold it when I quit flying. Was the best bit of kit I ever bought. Doing in-flight refueling being able to move my head was amazing. Also used it for formation flying.

I have now got into Flaming Cliffs 2 for lock-on. Didnt want to spend £160 on TrackIR and a pro clip. So i had alook on the net and came across Freetrack as mentioned above.

I had a PS3 eye toy doing nothing so with that and a trip to electronic retail outlet for some resistors, a batt holder, on/off switch and 3 IR led`s I built my own IR 3 point imitter.

I now use a freetrack setup and having used both £160 for TrackIR and £10 for free track there isnt any diffrence certainly not £150`s worth.

If you like to tinker with stuff and like the challange of setting up software then free track is the way to go.

Dont get me wrong if I had the money I would for the sake of not having to mess about buy TrackIR as it just works plug it in install the software load the game off you go. I dont have the money and like to tinker.

all i need now is spell check :-)

what do u need to get freetrack to work? i have a web cam if that helps

cheap skate hill billy with power pack hanging of the top of his head :D

Seriously nice project to be honest,i picked up a second hand trackir so was lucky.

Only part I am not keen on is having to have power lead to the cap nice way to get up and running tho.

Also look into freetrack if you have a webcam.

Nate

If you only really want to look around, i.e 2dof, and don't mind a little bit of diy then freetrack should work fine & save you quite a few £££'s.

LED safety glasses, which cost £4, work fine with Freetrack once you swap the led for an IR one, and they have the small disc battery contained in the led holder - no need for wires.

If you want 6dof then it's a bit more involved, which is why I never bothered with it :p

I'll post a few pics of the glasses I use later on.

Yes the pro-clip will work with free track.

The easiest way to get it to work is with w Wii mote using free software and a bluetooth dongle for your PC.

What you need to make a IR emitter.

3 BIC pens (just the tubes)
3 30ohm resitors (if using 2xAA 1500mha batteries)
3 IR led`s.
1 2xAA battery holder with PP3 connector (9v plug type)
Thin wire colour coded red and some black ie +/-
some shrink rapp.
Zip ties or tie rapps what ever you call them.
A little soldering skill.

Solder the red battery connector to some red wire, then solder the 3 30ohm resistors to this wire (just for neat ness) Shrink rapp each one leaving one exsposed end each. Also shrink rapp any connections as you go.

Take the 3LED`s and sand of the round ends to make them flat, do not expose the electrodes!!! Making the ends flat defuses the IR light and makes a nice flat surface for the web cam to detect.

solder the LED`s to enough wire to thread them through the BIC pen case. This will make a holder for the LED`s. Remember the middle or top LED is half if not one third the length of the lower outer two. Shrink wrap the led`s to the end of the BIC cases. Again checking length. Solder the + of each LED to 1 each of the resistors. Then solder the - to the black wire of the Battery holder.

I made my head set this way in case one of the LED`s failed then I inly have to replace the LED and not re wire the hole thing. If you prefer series then wire it that way.

Then tie rap the until to your headset. I used two around the headband then threaded two through them and over the BIC tubes holding them tight.

Connect the batteries and use a digital camera to see if the work. With the cameras CCD lens the screen should have 3 bright lights but looking with the naked eye you wont see any light.

You can uses white light LED`s but they will reflect off the monitor screen and bug the crap out of you.

WEB CAM you need to remove the IR filter to help it see the IR LED`s. Depending on your web cam google to see if it has one. Then replace the IR filter with some floppy disk, cut up the actual disk or some thing as dark and translucent. I used a PS3 eye toy so I didnt have to do the thing with the film. Also you dont have to do this with a Wiimote they just work once setup.

Heres some PIC`s.

Its a lot neater now I have fixed the position of the LED`s to get the best results.
If you want head tracking and have enought money for trackIR then do freetrack first, if you do it then awsome you have got new skills and saved a bundle of cash. Or just buy it and feel good about yourself. If you want head tracking and are short of cash build one you have nothning to loose and every thing to gain.

6dof in flaming cliffs 2, you need to use the trackIR fixer for some games.

A unlock for the TrackIR interface restircting the use of Freetrack, old story but some thing along the lines of you stole our code, no we didnt, thats ok we will lock you out any way and do deals with game makers then charge the public loads of money to use head tracking. thats ok we will make a fix and let people do it for free so neeeerrrrrrr.
