Hello,

For some reason the traction control light is on in the car. Soon as you start the car it comes as normal but then doesn't go off. Was fine yesterday :(
Looking online it could be a few different things, i'll take the car to the garage tomorrow morning as i'm going away on Wednesday.
Lots of things online suggest using vagcom to try clearing the light or for it to tell me what the problem is. On ebay you can get them for over a few hundred £ or for like £30 :S : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAG-Scanner-Engine-Airbag-ABS-Diagnostic-Scan-Tool-VW-Seat-Skoda-Audi-COM-Reset-/221117612438?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item337ba30196

Is the cheaper one no good?

What car?

Could be anything from a damaged ABS sensor to a failed pressure switch in the ABS module(which would be my bet).

knew i'd forget something, its a 2007 golf 1.4 petrol.
is the sensor a cheap fix? Luckily as we got the car of my mrs's mum and step dad and and are paying them back over time they're taking some of the cost or anything that go's wrong of what we owe them :)

Where do you live? Maybe someone is nearby and can scan the car for you. It's the right age for the ABS pressure sensor to have failed if it hasn't been fixed already. You can get a rebuild kit if it is that for around 200-250. An ABS wheel sensor will be around 60 at a guess.

Ring your local VW dealer, it's likely to be an ABS module and you can get done FOC.

Really? thats awsome will ask the mrs to phone up this morning wile i am at work. My local VW dealer is like a good 40 minute drive away but worth it if free :)

Forgot to ask, is it something thats going to make the car unsafe to drive? If VW can do it for free but not within the next couple of days would want to wait until im back

They will replace FOC if you have a full VW service history, otherwise I believe they will make a contribution based on how much VW service history the car has.

I was speaking to someone who works at VW when collecting a trade car, and they said it down to the discretion of the dealer.

Needless to say, if you kick up a stink with the manufacturer I'm sure they'd instruct the dealer to replace.

Just an update, i took the car back in Feb to my local car garage for their opinion, they said they think ABS module but didn't want to get the part just in-case it wasn't that part, they said to go to VW Dealer and find out what the part is that it needs and then go back to them and they'll do it much cheaper. The local garage didn't charge for taking a look, they don't normally.
Booked it in at VW who didn't have a slot until today, i took it down to VW Grange over Sands this morning and left it with them for a couple of hours while i went into town for breakfast. Came back and they advised it was the ABS module and without evening asking about what they were charging they said VW pay 100% of the cost and i didn't have to pay any diagnostic fees or out.

Really happy with them, don't have a dealer sevice history at all on the car as Grange is a 40 minute drive from me so wasn't expecting them to offer to pay any.

Quite nice when something go's right for a change, i think i will start taking it to them for the services as they seem nice guys.

As silly as this may sound, try giving it a good blast with a pressure washer - assuming you can find one working in this weather! - this happens a lot to trailers at work at this time of year, the fault often clears if I get the wash lads to blast the wheels.

Ultimately, you probably need a new sensor, but it may well be a temporary fix for now. :)

Edit: just read your above post!! :o

Never mind! :D
