Traction control problem?

On my old Peugeot 307 HDi my brakes seem to be working fine but I've noticed over the last couple of weeks or so that occasionally there's an odd feeling from the brake pedal. Hard to describe really. Not really a vibration, perhaps more like a clicking sensation. I can't make it happen if I brake hard. And it will often happen even on soft braking. Today, this light came on.

I rang a peugeot independent garage and described the icon, he reckons it's a traction control warning light?

Anyway, I've booked the car into my local mechanics for Monday to do diagnostics. Any idea what the problem might be? Could it be as simple as calipers sticking and unsticking, could that give the sensation from the pedal?

Had the same thing happen on my wife's old 307 petrol and the abs system was playing up which I believe is in the same system as the traction control.

Anyway we had to have the abs sensors replaced as they had corroded. This was causing the abs to work all the time causing the pulsing sensation in the pedal

Very common issue this light coming on. They have a lot of trouble with the ABS modules/units.

Thanks chaps. Sounds like a sensor.

'Pulsing', yeah, I think that describes it! Now that I recall, the mechanic sort of mentioned about the ABS kicking in early. So, is this a relatively easy/not too expensive fix? Garage is good, been using them for a few of things over the last couple of years, only £40 an hour compared to many rip off £80 an hour garages.

If it is the abs sensor they can be bought for around £15 each and they can be corroded in place so can be a bugger to replace. I think it took me around 2 hours.

Nice one, cheers. Ah well, I guess the car is safe to drive. I was worried earlier that the pedal pulsing was indicating something terrible and imminent like a brake cable snapping and the car not stopping.

No worries. That pulsating in the brake pedal is so you know the abs is activated. It'll be safe to drive just probably annoying after a while

Yeah, definitely annoying. So when the sensors were working fine, would I still expect to feel that pulsing but only if braking really hard in an emergency situation and not in normal braking?

Yeah it will pulsate under hard braking as the brakes are applied several times a second. If I remember correctly the pulsating is just feed back coming from the braking system, but was left so the driver would know it's working. Most modern cars will activate the hazard lights when the abs kicks in.

Cheers daffy, very educational and informative :)
