Hi all,

Went to France 2 weeks ago for a Holiday and advertised locally was Tractor Pulling. I haven't been for years so we thought why not.

The weather was not on our side, it was terrential rain, but as we were in the south of france when it stopped, it dried up quick-ish. Field was still muddy and you could see when the tractors came out with the ploughs to smooth the track that the mud was clamming up, but no matter.

There was a variety of tractors there, we were at the later session that had the bigger ones (lorry engines, bus engines, jet engines etc) and we even caught a couple of funny-car style ones come out with smaller engines, these were louder than the actual tractors (apart from the jets, they were just immense...

So, on with the pictures... (some are a bit blurry as we were on a hill, about 150m from the track and zoomed in quite far...)

goddamn, I love tractor pulling. used to watch it obsessively on eurosport as a kid.

the physics behind it is great. they don't grip. at all.

they spin the wheels flat out, flinging the loose suurface of the track out behing them...

and as we all know, every action has an equal and opposite reaction...so the tractor goes forward :D

One day I must see this in real life. There was one parked up outside a shop in France last week. Obviously their trophy piece which they were proud of but I'd love to hear what 7 top fuel hemis sound like passing by at full chat at about 30mph :D

That one with the 4 jets is like

For info the trumpets on the front aid flow into the engine at low speed. Otherwise you get standing waves, odd laminar flow and all sorts of nasties that smash up the turbine blades and demolish the engine when it's not moving through the air quickly.
