trade in ps3

i'm not enjoying blu-ray because it is prohibitively expensive. I only have a samsung 32inch and while there is a difference when compared to dvd, its just not worth the cost.

hmv are selling dvds for £3. dvd is a real bargin at the moment.

It is quite like when DVD started in this country, a very limited supply of movies, mainly older ones that you already owned.

My local video shop has about 15 blu-ray for rental (the national store), i dont mind renting if something new comes out, but who wants to pay £20-30 for a movie you already own?

it is quiet, which is nice

the psn store is cool too

but the key thing for me is the poor game performace. im not convinced anything will change, unless its a sony only title where a comparison isnt possible!

Downfalls of ports mate.

Do you think the ports situation will remain the same for the forseeable future? The Xbox 360 has the lead development simply because it is the easiest to program for even if the PS3 starts to outsell it?

It was interesting to hear John Carmack talking about id's Tech 5 (Rage) software. He said his team is doing the PC version, Nerve is doing the Xbox 360 and Z-Axis doing the PS3. He mentioned twice (maybe as an example, maybe not) that the PS3 was the most problematic because of its memory configuration and how they were cutting bits out [on all systems?] to fit the game into the PS3's memory.

The PS3 is definitely the harder to program for, I think development companies will assess the situations as they see fit though.

For a lot of teams however I don't think they'll change from the Xbox360, it's easier to develop for, where as the PS3 requires more time and money to produce something to the same standard as the Xbox360. Is it worth the hassle when you can get the Xbox360 version looking as good, or better than the PS3 versions in less time at the moment?

I dont think its as simple as that. Say for example the Playstation 3 became substantional market leader, do you think devs would ignore it because its easier to program a 360? I dunno maybe Sony are relying on thier own developers a little to set a good impression.

Thats a great point, i used to think this also before the PS3 was released here.

I just hope its not the case!

Quite a few developers are now saying they will use the PS3 as lead platform for multiplat games as its easier going from PS3 to 360 than the other way round. For example Dark sector, Burnout paradise, Haze (if it does come to 360). Games using the Unreal 3 engine ie Rainbow 6 vegas and I belive GRAW 2 are suffering from frame rate issues, but as Sony and Epic have been working on an improved version of the U3 Engine, which runs better than at the samepoint in Gears, i expect in the future the PS3 will have no problems with the U3 engine and may possible run better.
Also Sony only released their Edge tool kit to developers in early March late Feb this year so I dont think we will see the benefit of this yet. Im sure that Killzone 2 is one of the first games to use the Edge tool kit and i thought it looked impressive (like most of the gaming press).

I thought Epic made a newer version of the Unreal engine and that's also the reason 360 can't get the new GoW PC content, because the Unreal engine has been changed a lot so it would be very hard porting it over they said.

Didn't think it had anything to do with Sony.

Anyway, doesn't surprise me the new Unreal engine runs better, Epic said they could improve from Gears Of War and they've proved it with UT3.

Well not sure if this "new" Unreal engine for Gears on the PC has got anything to do with Sony, but at E3 2007, Sony announced a partnership with Epic with the objective of optimizing the Unreal Engine 3 for the PlayStation 3 hardware, which would affect the dozens of games and developers currently using it. I just thought it would be tweeks to the PS3 side of things.
