I thought this probably deserved a thread. Last year I bought a 2003 Audi RS6. I've always wanted one; the blend of practicality, all round ability, spec and performance combined with subtle styling really appealed to me. At the time, friends, co-workers, people on this forum commented that it would be extremely expensive to run and of course you were all right.

As much as I loved the RS, it had got to the stage where it just wasn't worth continuing to plough money into it. I knew it was on the original gearbox and would soon need a new one (~£7k fitted). No decent warranty company would cover it. So I got rid and bought this.

Yup, another RS6. This time Audi approved used with a full year's warranty covering everything but consumables. That's extendable up to 7 years old so I've got a good 4 years of completely hassle free motoring. I've even got 2 years free servicing.

The spec is a complete nerd-fest which suits me perfectly. A few highlights...

5.0l V10 producing 580PS
6 speed automatic with paddle shifts
Full Nappa leather interior (heated)
Huge brakes (not ceramic, about the only option it doesn't have)
TV (digital), DAB radio, reversing camera + advanced parking
BOSE
Powered boot lid (very cool). Power close doors.
Keyless entry/go

How does it go? It doesn't quite have the urgency of the old RS, it's much smoother and more refined but ballistically quick. The gearbox seems to upshift with the speed of a DSG but it pulls away with the smoothness of a torque converter auto. It blips on the down shifts too. It's awesome.

Future plans? 700bhp remap, speed limiter removed, trip to the Nurburgring :D.

I'm quite open to criticism and discussing other cars I could have bought for the money. Fire away.

Absolutely awesome. How much better an AMG E Class or whatever else you can buy for this money would have been is irrelevent - you are clearly an Audi nut and frankly you can keep your R8's because this is the ultimate Audi :D

Shame about the older RS6 but they are getting a point where its hard to imagine why anyone would buy one - as you will now no doubt demonstrate over the next few years you can pretty much buy and run a much newer one for the price of keeping a 10 year old one on the road. I suspect they are doomed to fall into the hands of collectors who garage them and fools who don't know or think about the realities of owning them and quickly kill them :(

Looks like my mates old one, he had a 700bhp remap, which didn't make anywhere near 700bhp on the rollers but JESUS it went.

Excellent purchase. If I had to buy a big practical powerful estate, I would always go Audi.

I forgot to talk about dynamic drive. I've not played much with "dynamic" mode yet but in comfort it's compliant and handles potholes and bumps effortlessly whilst in sport it's firmer than my old RS was on coilovers.

I'm sure it'll go horrendously wrong in a couple of years but until then :D.

My Mrs was driving us to a mates about 3 weeks ago and we pulled up at the lights next to an RS6, Mrs was in the wrong lane which I informed her off with a look of disgust.

"I'll beat him to the lights, he's only in an estate"

I **** you not.
