Why are train prices stupidly expensive in UK?

I am looking at going from Bristol to Leeds and a train ticket is £79. You can fly from Bristol to Leeds for £80!

In many other counteries train prices are reasonable unlike here. Same goes for bus (un)fair prices
 
I would like to know the fuel that trains run on and how much it costs in comparison to petrol and diesel prices for running cars. Price per mile and ticket prices would also be interesting stats.

So i shelled out £166 on a monthly ticket between doncaster and leeds. Of the 3 trains i have got to work so far all 3 have arrived late.

This morning i was 15 minutes late as the train pulled into leeds at 09.02 instead of 08.46. (which I got a telling off for on my 3rd day at work)
