Train Prices

Following on (well not really) from the bus prices thread moaning about the cost we have the train prices...

I've just gone to book a train ticket and seen the prices. Singles from my town to Plymouth are £60+, and a return is now £62.70. Last month it was £52, so a nice jump of £10 and 20% in a month!

I know they rise but usually a couple of pounds a year, but I assume as mentioned the train companies have somehow got to make back the money they are "loosing" from reducing the restricted tarrif tickets.

I thought there was an almost national jump in the past month, there was one network where the prices have gone down, but I think the majority were due pretty heavy hikes

I think there are "restricted" (they are called something else) tickets that are linked to inflation, these are the London tickets afaik.

I didn't really have much of a problem with train prices before, as long as ou booked a few days in advance you could get across the country for £15-20 (my regular train journey is 4.5 hours from north of london to Plymouth) and two singles could be had for £35 or an open return for £50. £75 for a single (the next cheapest was £35 arriving at midnight, most were £75 or over) for next week is taking the **** however, as is the 20% rise in return tickets!

This is with a young persons rail card as well.

I was planning on seeing my GF next week, unfortunately I can't afford the prices so it looks like a no go...

I travel to London from Plymouth for £22.50 first class.

Where do you live, Aberdeen?

Yeah I used to be able to travel from just north of London to Plym for that much as well, now it seems to have gone up massively. However after checking another site (I was looking at thetrainline) it seems to be a lot cheaper on that site, but still not as cheap as it was last month. The cheap price seems to be £35 instead of £25ish and most seem to still be £60+
