Aren't we close to being the most expensive in Europe for rail travel and yet the service is in the dark ages compared with some of our European neighbours.
Partly due to the huge under investment in rail over the later parts of last century.
People like to look at rail travel in their own little bubble - my trains are bad therefore the UK has terrible trains. The worst are those who moan about travel delays during Christmas and Easter - like we should tailor the improvement plans around the people who use the service the least!
Anyway most don't have anything close to an understanding of how complex and massive the railway system is. There is no quick fix and no simple solution. What I think it could do with is a period of stability without any major organisational changes, although the franchise system certainly needs some work.
